Check out these indoor workouts and fitness studios in Metro Manila:
Pilates - OneLife Studio
Great for strengthening and toning specific muscles and parts of your body, pilates is a low impact workout that incorporates controlled movements that improve your balance, core strength, and flexibility. Most studios like OneLife Studio offer pilates in reformers, or special machine equipment that aid in pilates movements, but you can do pilates workouts at home without the fancy bed, too.
See list of OneLife Studio branches.
Yoga - Urban Ashram
You've probably tried yoga at least once in your life, but if you haven't, now's the perfect time to try. And if you're looking to do it more seriously and consistently this year, then more power to you. There are countless yoga studios dotted across the Metro, making it the most accessible indoor workout on our list. You can do it from the comforts of your own home, or seek the guidance of trained teachers for proper form, breathing technique, and cooldown. Drop by the studio nearest you, or take up our recommendation to visit Urban Ashram or book an online class with them.
Urban Ashram Yoga is at 3/F Brixton Building, Brixton Street, Kapitolyo, Pasig City and 9/F The Menarco Tower, 32nd Street corner 9th Avenue, Bonifacio Global City. For more information, log on to Urban Ashram Yoga's website.
Lagree - Ultra Lagree
If you want to target multiple muscle groups, you might want to check out lagree. The low-impact, controlled workout has been compared a lot to core-centric pilates because of the use of equipment, but lagree targets multiple muscle groups, with a focus on strength and endurance.
Ultra Lagree is at 2/F Estancia Mall, Capitol Commons, Pasig City.
Spinning - Ride Revolution
Stationary bike exercises like spinning allow you to focus on your lower body, but did you know you can also incroporate upper body workouts in the same workout? You can bike with friends or make new ones in class should you attend a session. Plus, the fun music and encouraging environment makes it feel less like torture and more actual fun.
See a list of Ride Revolution studios.
Pole - Polecats Manila
Pole might have had a negative reputation in the past, but those days are long gone. With a focus on strength, flexibility, and artistry, pole flexes many of your physical and mental muscles—it does require a bit of thinking on how to stay on the pole and jump to the next move in style. Pure workout aside, you can also unleash your creativity with the moves, or it can be a safe outlet to unleash your inner sensuality alongside like-minded individuals.
Polecats Manila is at 22/F, Strata 100, F. Ortigas Avenue, Ortigas Center, Pasig, Metro Manila. For more information, visit the Polecats Manila website.
Aerial Hammock - Elite Aerial Arts
We know it looks hard, but as with all things in life, it gets easier the more you do it. Aerial hammock involves maneuvering a hammock, or a loop of cloth attached to the cieling, while you pull off moves that target multiple muscle groups. More than just breaking a sweat, you'll definitely be challenged to get creative with music and refined movements that do take a lot of strength to pull off. Call it beautiful discipline.
Elite Aerial Arts is at 143 Maginhawa, Diliman, Quezon City.
Hoop - Polecats Manila
Another showcase of beautiful discipline would be lifting yourself up on a hoop. Instead of moving a hammock, you'll have to pull yourself up and stay on a metal ring that can carry more than just your weight. The moves are different and it all boils down to preference, but it imrpoves your strength all the same. Give them all a try if you're feeling adventurous.
Polecats Manila is at 22/F, Strata 100, F. Ortigas Avenue, Ortigas Center, Pasig, Metro Manila. For more information, visit the Polecats Manila website.
Aerial Silk - Beast House Pole & Aerial
Take it to the next level with aerial silk. Unlike the hammock which is fully connected and permits you to sit, aerial silk uses two separate lengths of cloth. So if you can't sit around and prepare for a big pull, you're going to rely on arm strength to lift yourself up and your core and leg muscles to weave through the silk. We know, it sounds challenging, but the payoff is so worth it once you pull off a pretty move and hear the applause of your classmates.
Beast House Pole and Aerial Dance Studio is at 2/F Pioneer Center, Pioneer Street, Kapitolyo, Pasig City. For more information, visit Beast House Pole and Aerial Dance Studio’s official Facebook page.
Rowing - Saddle Row
Rowing, which is traditionally done outdoors to race boats using oars, can now be done without the water, the boat, or the paddles. You're basically mimicking the movement and getting the payoff by doing it indoors using equipment. The full-body indoor workout was once exclusive to Ive League schools in the United States, but now you can get a taste of it at Saddle Row—Manila's first and only indoor rowing studio.
Saddle Row is at 3/F Power Plant Mall, Makati City.
Calisthenics - SPARTA
Instead of using machines and equipment, you can opt to use your own body as the weight. Calisthenics is a form of strength training that uses your own body weight as resistance to perform multi-joint, compound movements—no equipment needed. These are relatively quick and require the use of your whole body so yes, you will feel the burn. Get good at it enough and you can work on your strength and endurance at home, but nothing beats going to an indoor gym first to get proper guidance, like at SPARTA Philippines.
SPARTA Philippines is at 126 Pioneer St., Mandaluyong City.
