Adidas Taps Filipino Artist Egg Fiasco to Create Cool New Ultraboost Sneakers
They teamed up with six Southeast Asian artists for their new collection.
(SPOT.ph) Though Adidas is best known for their classic, decades-old styles—like the Stan Smith, the Superstar, and the Forum Low—the sportswear brand is constantly looking for ways to not only update their lineup, but showcase fresh new talent from all over the world. Most recently, they teamed up with a group of Southeast Asian artists to create the Ultraboost DNA City Pack—and yes, the collaboration features a Filipino artist. Painter Greg Guleserian, better known as Egg Fiasco, was one of six designers Adidas recruited to create pairs that "celebrate the diverse identities and culure in the region," they said in a press release.
Egg Fiasco is known for colorful, eye-catching paintings that draw from a wide variety of influences including comic books, toys, tattoos, and pop culture. His graffiti-like style results in artworks that have a disinctly street-art feel with mutating figures and warped geometric elements being just a few key elements of his paintings.
For his contribution to the DNA City Pack, Egg Fiasco created a pair of Ultraboost sneakers inspired by his childhood memories—in paricular, he modeled the shoe’s concept after video-game design. "I discovered that the games I used to play when I was a kid [are] the same color palette of my artworks now. [That] became like a kick-off concept for us." That Egg Fiasco would use his childhood as inspiration for the pair seems only fitting as he shares that he's been "a big fan of the brand ever since I was younger," noting that the experience of working with them was both "exciting and very challenging."
In terms of incorporating his style onto the shoe, Egg Fiasco notes that he mostly gave the pair the same treatment he would paintings, which meant creating layers of jumbled patterns and textures as well as adding bright pops of color. Despite drawing from his own prismatic, out-of-this world works, he points out that the goal was to make a pair that was still wearable, such that "everyone can enjoy it [and] everyone can wear it in their own style."
The Adidas Ultraboost sneaker designed by Egg Fiasco features a predominantly navy upper, sporting that woven texture that you'd see on many of the silhouette's other iterations. The deep, neutral tone becomes the point at which the shoe is grounded—keeping the style wearable while still playing around with some pretty eye-catching elements included pops of bright yellow on the back of the sole and on the Three Stripes logo as well as geometric patterns overlaying the upper and lining the sole, giving the sneaker shape and dimension without compromosing the Ultraboost's unmistakable silhouette. The pair is finished off with bright blue shoelaces, (literally) tying the whole shoe together.

One particular element of Egg Fiasco's Ultraboost you shouldn't miss is the shoe’s sock liner, wherein the artist got to incorporate his signature logo—a monkey character of his own design that he calls his alter ego. "It’s a really special area for me," he shares.
