What to Expect at the 35th Manila International Book Fair
For one, general nerdiness
(SPOT.ph) Some smartypants will say "Books, duh." But yes, do expect to see books, books, and more books. The 35th Manila International Book Fair opening ceremonies, held on September 17, kicked off the mad dash for discounts, copies of the newest titles from local writers, and hard to find specialty books that are now miraculously on the shelves.
MIBF 2014 will provide all of your bookworm needs at the SMX Convention Center until September 21. Incidentally, that’s the launch of Lourd de Veyra’s Little Book of Speeches and he’ll be there to sign copies. He might even pose with you for some selfies, maybe.
Meanwhile, Moymoy Lulumboy: Ang Batang Awang by Segundo Matias, Jr. will be launched today at 11 a.m. and to help promote the wonderful genre that is Children’s Literature, a special musical program will be presented by PETA. Check them out at Function Room 5, SMX Convention Center.
If you want to pick up more Children’s Lit titles, make sure you swing by the Tahanan Books booth. They’re offering up to 50% off on select titles and they’re also launching new stuff. Check them out at Aisle J Booth No. 141-142.
The Gintong Aklat Awards have concluded, but you can still check out other special events like Candy Gourlay’s talk for the National Language and Literature Summit, "Why I Write for Young Readers," to be held at Meeting Room 7 on September 20 (Saturday). The summit starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 11 p.m.
On September 21 (Sunday), Wattpad: Redefining What It Means to Be a Reader will be held at the Stage Area. Love it or hate it, it’s changing something in the Philippine literary landscape. Users even have their very own meet-up at Function Room 1 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees might want to check out Dr. Isagani R. Cruz’ talk on How to Write a Book at Meeting Rooms 7 and 8, to get a few tips and improve their craft.
In any case, don’t forget to bring totes and eco-bags. It’s impossible to walk out of the book fair empty-handed.
