Banaue and Siquijor are part of Asia's 10 destinations on the rise
More places to add to your bucket list!
(SPOT.ph) Agoda's latest Travel Smart study reveals that more and more travelers are looking into lesser-known destinations for their next adventures. The result, which came out on March 8, ranks 10 places in Asia gaining popularity based on the bookings made on the accommodation site in 2016. Two of those that made the list are the Philippines' very own Banaue in the province of Ifugao and Siquijor Island in the Visayas.
Siquijor was often ignored because of tales of the mambabarang and aswang haunting the island. It is now a top destination for backpackers who want to experience unspoiled white-sand beaches, untouched mangrove forests, and mesmerizing firefly sightings.
Banaue, a place often skipped for nearby Sagada in the Mountain Province, is a sight to behold especially with the stunning terrace hillsides flanking the region. We all know the Banaue Rice Terraces from our grade-school history class.
"It's clear that more travelers are adopting a more adventurous approach to travel, exploring new, undiscovered places rather than the traditional 'holiday' to a well-trodden destination," Andy Edwards, Agoda Global Director Brand and Communication, explained about the list. "We're seeing an increase in bookings made in areas that bring travelers closer to local culture and nature, where life is experienced at a different pace, and against a different backdrop," he continued.
