This building in Escolta has a secret to tell
Join the VIP tour to know more.
(SPOT.ph) The First United Building (a.k.a. Perez-Samanillo Building) was once one of the busiest establishments along Escolta, Manila. It used to house the Berg Department Store during its heydays in the 1930s and the office of its owner Sy Lian Teng, who bought the popular store from the German Ernest Berg. First United Building's (FUB) other claim to fame is that it was the tallest building in Manila at the time it was completed in 1928. Filipino architect Andres Luna de San Pedro, son of Juan Luna, was at the helm of its construction.
These stories are easy to find out with a quick search on Google, but we all know that the best tales are those that aren't written. Sy Lian Teng's son, Roberto Sylianteng, and wife Lorraine Young-Sylianteng will offer an exclusive tour of the building on May 27, 1 p.m. This tour includes stories of the people, places, and events surrounding Escolta's past as well as revitalizing efforts for the future. The couple will also give you a sneak peek of works-in-progress inside FUB.
Guests of the tour will be able to check out the bazaar at Hub: Make Lab, make pit stops at the local bar Fred's Revolucion and coffee shop The Den, interact with the creative group of 98B Collaboratory, and see the newly-opened coworking space First: Coworking Community. You also get the chance to take a peek of the 1920 Otis Elevator Mechanical Room, which isn't usually open to the public. And last but not the least, you can go up the penthouse with a view not seen by everyone.
Tickets, priced from P250 to P350, are available through their Facebook event page. First United Building is at 413 Escolta Street, Binondo, Manila.
