Siargao's Very Own Wakepark Is Opening Soon
Another reason to visit the island!
(SPOT.ph) Siargao in Surigao del Norte is known as the Surfing Capital of the Philippines because of the numerous surf spots around its coast. Now, to add to the long list of things to do on the island, board-sports lovers would be glad to know that the surf town will be opening its very own wakepark in July 2018—the Siargao Wakepark.
Construction of the cable park project, under Fluid Flow Adventures, started in 2016 after the Department of Environment and Natural Resources issued an environmental compliance certificate. With locals and frequent surfers expressing concern that Siargao might be on its way to becoming another Boracay (which is not a very good thing), Siargao Wakepark clarified that the “[number] of [coconut] trees cut down was very minimal” to make way for the cable park's man-made lake. “The grounds were open space already, and it was used for cultivating kamote, the sweet potatoes,” a note on their Facebook says. The management also invites local business owners to be part of the project as founding members.
Now that the construction is on its final phase, award-winning Siargaonon surfers like Nilbie Blancada and Manuel Melindo have been invited to test the wakepark. Eight-year-old surfer Kai Kai Alcala can’t help but express his enthusiasm after doing a few rounds—“I’m addicted yewww,” he posted on Instagram.
Not much else has been revealed about the exact location of this new tourist destination, except that it’s in General Luna. We’ll just have to wait and see for updates.
How to Get There: Cebu Pacific (via CEBgo) offers affordable direct flights from Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 4 to Siargao Domestic Airport in Sayak from Thursdays to Tuesdays, with more flights to be added by March 25. Its lowest year-round fares start at P2,371.
