This Artsy Hotel in Tagaytay Is Built from Container Vans

It's not too far from Manila, too!

(SPOT.ph) In the summer of 2017, La Union in northern Luzon wowed tourists with a newly opened accommodation made of repurposed shipping containers—Vessel Hostel. Months later, another eco-friendly spot welcomed guests in the chilly city of Tagaytay just south of Metro Manila—Containers by Eco Hotel, which opened in November 2017.

Eco Hotel is a chain of accommodations that follows the basic definition of a green hotel—"environmentally responsible lodging that follows sustainable practices." Its flagship property, which opened in 2015, is located across Ayala Serin Mall in Aguinaldo Highway; and its other branches are in Boracay, Panglao, El Nido, Makati, and Batangas.

For its second Tagaytay property, Eco Hotel pushed the boundaries of upcycling and recycled 30 shipping containers into hotel rooms. These can either accommodate two guests (Queen Room, rate starts at P2,700) or five people (Family Room, rate starts at P6,700). The furniture is also made from scrap materials—the chairs and tables made from spare and old tires, lamps made from wine bottles and metal pipes, and bunk beds made from pine wood.

The use of shipping containers for hotels, restaurants, and homes has risen in the last three years. Aside from being environment-friendly, it is also more economical to purchase a used shipping container and rebuilt it into something functional than to build a building from cement. It is also easy to incorporate art to the industrial look of the steel structure, just like what Eco Hotel is doing with its properties. Their resident artist Mario Costan Binongo designs murals and turns junks into artworks, bringing out the beauty in ordinary things.

Containers by Eco Hotel is also pet-friendly and PWD-accessible, so you can be sure that no one gets left behind on your weekend getaway.
