(SPOT.ph) With the effects of the global climate crisis growing at an alarming rate, every little bit of action to preserve the environment helps. This includes the efforts of Lamitan City in Basilan to minimize waste by recycling tens of thousands of plastic bottles and turning them into tulips of different colors.
A total of 26,877 discarded plastic bottles were collected from 45 villages around Lamitan City. These were cut; painted with ivory, purple, orange, yellow, blue, pink, and red colors; and arranged into a circular garden converging in a heart-shaped patch of plastic tulips at the center. Even the pathway around the garden is made from shredded plastic bottles that are mixed with cement, sand, and gravel.
Lamitan City's Tulip Garden at Sitio Panansangan in Barangay Ubit opened to the public on September 23. Visiting the attraction is free of charge. The project is in line with Mayor Rose Furigay's campaign on solid waste management called "Abante Lamitan, Atras Basura."
