(SPOT.ph) Hotel Okura is one of five top-tier accommodations at Newport World Resorts, formerly known as Resorts World Manila. Arguably one of the most luxe options for staying in at the Pasay integrated resorts property, Okura stands out not just because of the prestige, but also because of their uniquely Japanese design and way of service. One definite signal of how this hotel is different are the Japanese wooden tubs you can find in their rooms—but we’ll spill more about that later on.
There are 16 Okura hotels in Japan, with nine located elsewhere across the globe. You can bet that the one in Manila was built to their high standards, as quite literally evidenced by their towering 18-meter high atrium at the center of their hotel, which houses the lobby and Yawaragi, their in-house dining spot. Ride the elevator to the fifth floor to land right in the heart of it all: pagodas standing in the massive hall, sheltering their restaurant and the front desk from the high walls that hide the rooms' hallways on the floors up above. And you can’t miss the trees either.
What makes staying at the Okura extra special is their type of Japanese hospitality, dubbed omotenashi, it is an honest and barefaced type of service. We got to stay at the Palace Suite in Hotel Okura, one of their suiter, we mean, sweeter rooms, and the highlight was that tub we mentioned earlier. Called hinoki tubs after the cypress wood they’re made of, these were handcrafted by Japanese artisans from the mountainous Nagiso Town, and yes, you can try soaking in one of them right in Metro Manila. The bathrooms are a big part of the rooms in Okura, as each is equipped with separate tubs and rainfall showers and, yep, a Toto toilet. It’s the type of place you could spend hours in, just relaxing; a zen little spot in the city. But before we get ahead of ourselves, check out what Okura Manila is all about.

What to do
First things first, you can chill in the room for hours on end just soaking in the cypress tub. Note that they take special care of the tub, so hot water is all you really need to get into the zone. Something about the wood keeps the heat of the water in, so you can rest your weary muscles real good. The room also has multimedia facilities like a smart TV.
Once you’re done with that, you can get even more relaxed at the hotel’s fitness center, where you can hop into a jet bath, or pop into the sauna or steam room to soothe your stressed-out brain cells even more. We suggest reserving an hour or two in the hotel to try out the facilities; more than enough time to get a bit of maximum relaxation.
If staying still and zoning out isn’t your thing at the moment, there’s also a gym and swimming pool at Okura. The 20-meter swimming pool is located on the rooftop, so you can get cool city views, too. And once you’re done checking everything out at Okura, don’t forget you’re at Newport World, so the mall, casinos, and other hotels are all just a walk away.
Where to eat
Hotel Okura has two in-house dining options: the Yawaragi at the atrium is where the complimentary breakfast is served. You can also order different meals, snacks, drinks, and desserts throughout the day; their menu has both Asian and Western specialties, so you’re bound to find something for whatever type of palate. At the rooftop pool, there is also a bar for hefty meals—their menu consists mainly of dependable Western and Asian fare—and a rather extensive slew of drinks.
Take the elevator down to the fifth floor, and you’ll be at a bridgeway to the rest of Newport. A few steps down the hallway past other prime restaurants will take you to the Yamazato, a fine-dining spot brought in by Okura as well. Entering this space will make you feel as if you’ve been transported to Japan thanks to its Origami-inspired interiors, and most especially when you try their fare.
Where to shop
Just a few steps away from Yamazato is the Newport Mall. You can check out upscale shops, catch a movie, dine at a resto, or just while away the time.
