10 Artsy Spots in Singapore, According to Abbey Sy

Read the rest in the first issue of ABC Magazine.

(SPOT.ph) Artist and creative entrepreneur Abbey Sy recently launched ABC Magazine, a publication that gives artists, crafters, and makers a list of tools, some tips, and inspiration that they need to create beautiful works they can be proud of. “As someone who teaches workshops, I’ve always been an advocate of learning new things and sharing them with others,” Sy says in her opening letter. “Inside these pages, I give a glimpse of my travels, advice, and the learnings I picked up along the way.”

For the first issue of ABC Magazine, themed "Student of Life," she encourages readers to be open to learning and to always yearn for new knowledge to fuel their craft. And one of her first lessons is a fun rundown of artsy spaces, great bookstores, and even coffee hangouts in the Lion City for the crafty traveler. Here's "ABC in Singapore" (p. 19-20) in the words of Abbey Sy:

National Gallery of Singapore

1 Saint Andrews Road

This relatively new museum showcases the largest public collection of modern art in Singapore and Southeast Asia. Don’t miss the beautifully curated books, clothing, and stationery items located in the Gallery & Co. shop.

Art Friend

Bras Basah Complex, 231 Bain Street

A staple amongst art students and professionals, this store carries almost all types of materials for specific materials from paper, paint, pens to other DIY tools.

Library at Orchard

Orchard Road, Orchard Gateway

This library houses a good selection of books from various categories. I was surprised to see a big shelf of type books on the fourth floor (something I rarely encounter in libraries!). The architecture and interior design is beautiful, making it highly conducive to reading.

Straits Art Co PTE LTD

420 North Bridge Road, North Bridge Center

This small shop carries a good quantity of painting materials as well as paper and other drawing tools.

9 Yong Siak Street

An independent bookstore located in the quaint Tiong Bahru neighborhood, BooksActually carries a variety of fiction and literature books for the quintessential bibliophile.

Basheer Graphic Books

Bras Basah Complex, 231 Bain Street

Located at the top floor of Bras Basah Complex, Basheer has the best selection of art books and magazines in Singapore.

68 Orchard Road, Plaza Singapura

It houses a multitude of scrapbooking products, art tools, ephemera, and itsy-bitsy crafty tools. Definitely a must-visit for craft lovers.

Cat Socrates

Bras Basah Complex, 231 Bain Street

A quaint Zakka-style shop you shouldn’t miss, Cat Socrates sells everything from washi tapes, wall décor, and greeting cards to books and home decor.

Chye Seng Huat Hardware

150 Tyrwhitt Road

A hidden gem a few meters from Lavender Station, this is one of the meccas of coffee lovers in Singapore. Try their wide selection of pastries to go with your cup of java.

Sunday Folks

44 Jalan Merah Saga, Chip Bee Gardens

Known for its long lines during peak hours and holidays, this establishment serves one of the best waffles and ice cream desserts in Singapore.

The first issue of ABC Magazine (Summit Books) is available in newsstands, bookstores, convenience stores, and supermarkets nationwide for P250.
