Shrek The Musical Is Coming to Manila This 2025

(SPOT.ph) Hear ye, Ogres! Far Far Away is now closer to home as Manila is getting a stage production of Shrek The Musical this 2025. 

Just in time for the holidays, Shrek the Musical will run from October to December 2025 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Pasay. This is the first time this Broadway show is coming to our shores, and we're ready to get our show on (and get paid, iykyk).

Shrek The Musical is getting its Filipino glow-up courtesy of the Full House Theater Company, the theatrical production arm of Newport World Resorts. They're the folks who gave us shows of Filipino-led productions of Annie, The Sound of Music, and original musicals such as Bituing Walang Ningning, Ang Huling El Bimbo, and Buruguduy Stun Stugudunstuy. 

The upcoming Philippine run of Shrek The Musical will be directed by Michael Williams, a seasoned theater artist whose career spans over three decades both as a director and actor. Assisting him on Shrek The Musical is Cara Barredo, with musical staging by Dexter Santos, choreography by Stephen Viñas, and music direction by 2023 Gawad Buhay Outstanding Musical Direction awardee Rony Fortich.

What is Shrek The Musical all about?

Shrek The Musical is a 2008 Broadway production by DreamWorks Theatricals and Neal Street Productions. It was inspired by William Steig's book Shrek! and the cult-favorite DreamWorks Animation film Shrek with elements from the sequels Shrek 2 and Shrek Forever After.

The two-act play features over 25 original songs with music by Jeanine Tesori and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, who also wrote the playbook. Since opening in 2008, the show has earned eight Tony Award nominations in 2009, including Best Musical, and took home the Best Costume Design of a Musical award.

So just exactly who is putting on all the green and the grime to become Shrek for this production? We don't know—yet. As of writing, Full House Theater Company is still on the lookout for their lead ogre, fast-talking ass—er, Donkey, their princess, the evil villain, and the ragtag ensemble of fairy tale characters. 

There's going to be an open audition for the roles of young and teen Fiona on July 19 and 20 at the Academy for Leisure and Tourism in Pasay. So, if you've got a little ogre in your life who can belt out a Soprano with a range from B3 to C#5, prep them to perform I Know It's Today—the character's major solo from the show, stat!

And while it may be tempting to push your luck and try to audition regardless of age (Asians are baby-faced after all), the role requires the actors for young Fiona and teen Fiona to be roughly 10 to 12 years old and 14 to 16 years old, respectively. So we can't guarantee you'll be given a shot if you're well above those ranges. But hey, as the song says, "You'll never know if you don't go. You'll never shine if you don't glow."

You may recall a similar casting call from last March for all the adult roles. Seeing as no further auditions were held, it might be safe to say that the Full House Theater Company may have already found their Shrek, adult Fiona, and Donkey. If you've missed the chance to audition, well, who knows, they might just open another round for other roles.
