(SPOT.ph) It's been 14 years since Michiko Yamamoto's Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros graced the big screen, and six years since we've seen Nicolas B. Pichay's Maxie the Musical onstage, but LGBTQ+ representation in media still needs a lot of work. With SOGIE Equality Bill currently in the hands of our lawmakers, it's more relevant now than ever to hear the story of Maxie—told in the most fabulous way possible, of course. Bit by Bit Company, in July 2020, is bringing back the coming-of-age musical to the Philippine stage.
Maxie the Musical revolves around Maxie, a gay teen who is torn between protecting his family and falling in love with a young cop. It retains the plot of the original film, which was directed by Auraeus Solito. Dexter M. Santos reprises his role as the director of the musical adaptation, which was created by Pichay (book and lyrics) in collaboration with William Elvin Manzano, JJ Pimpinio, and Janine Santos for the music.
Auditions for the 2020 staging will be held on September 30 and October 1 at Ateneo de Manila University's Areté in Quezon City. Interested actors, from 13 years old and above, need to have "strong singing voices, acting capabilities, and background in dance." All roles are up for grabs.
