Centro de Turismo Intramuros: What You Need to Know

(SPOT.ph) Intramuros has always been a favorite destination for history buffs and visitors hoping to get a whiff of what lifestyle and culture in the Philippines was like during the Spanish occupation. But let's face it: touring the Walled City without a guide just scratches the surface of the area's rich history.

But here's a bit of good news: beginning this June, tourists can now deep dive into Intramuros' past, even its present and future, by heading over to the newly opened Centro de Turismo Intramuros. This free museum is open to the public daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Centro de Turismo Intramuros, a.k.a. the Intramuros Tourist Center, is a comprehensive tourist hub featuring a museum that offers an immersive experience into the rich history, vibrant present, and sustainable future of Intramuros.

Inside the museum-slash-tourist center, visitors will journey through Intramuros' pre-colonial roots, its role as a Spanish fortress, the devastation during World War II, and its present and future through the showcase of carefully curated artifacts and exhibits. 

Centro de Turismo Intramuros is housed at the site of the former San Ignacio Church, renowned for its Neoclassical architecture and intricate woodwork but was sadly destroyed during World War II.  In 2018, the reconstruction of the building was completed, and in 2019 the Museo de Intramuros was opened to the public,  alongside the reconstructed San Ignacio Church and Mission House of the Society of Jesus. Centro de Turismo Intramuros is a revitalized and renovated version of the Museo de Intramuros.

"Intramuros, with its storied walls and timeless streets, has always been a symbol of our resilience as a people. This center will add a new chapter to our legacy. It will house invaluable artifacts, tell the stories of our ancestors, and offer a space for learning, reflection, and inspiration. It will also give us a good reason to stroll through these historical photos without having to pretend we’re lost tourists," says First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos during the launch of Centro de Turismo Intramuros. 

How to book visits to Centro de Turismo Intramuros

Centro de Turismo Intramuros is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Although walk-ins are accepted, guests are encouraged to reserve their slots online through an online form.
