(SPOT.ph) Just a few weeks shy of the impending doom that was the lockdown two years ago, Art Fair Philippines 2020 managed to push through with a live run of the annual event. Little did we know then that it would be the last in-person art fair we'd be having for a long while. Art Fair Philippines 2021 tapped into the digital sphere like everything else that year, and the four levels of The Link were transformed into a busy website of galleries and art talks.

This year, ArtFairPH is back with its crowd-drawing, face-to-face-with-art glory as the event moves to the open-air Ayala Triangle Gardens, still in Makati City, with special exhibitions. Art Fair Philippines 2022 is slated to happen from March 23 to April 1. Aside from the onsite show, you can also catch the other displays through their website and at the respective locales of participating galleries. Here's a rundown of what to expect so you can plan your Art Fair Philippines "battleplan" accordingly.

He worked on a number of fashion shoots for Manila's top fashion magazines including Mega and Preview, and was one of the guest judges for Project Runway Philippines. His participation is essential to this year's ArtFairPH/Photo, which is titled Tattoos, Ternos and Couture, A Celebration of Philippine Fashion Photography.

This year's ArtFairPH/Film will have an on-site screening at the Ayala Triangle Gardens. You can catch digital films by New York-based new media artist Jeremy Couillard, who is known for his humorous narratives about future dystopias. Up for showing is his newest film There Is No Up Or Down, Only Attraction; and three works from his Fuzz Spiral series, which is based on the artist's video game called Fuzz Dungeon.

What's New at the Fair

One of this year's new features is the exhibition output of ArtFairPH/Residencies, which was launched in 2021 when the fair called on artists to apply for a residency program project. Five artists were selected and paired with different art spaces in the country: Derek Tumala at the Manila Observatory in Quezon City, Hannah Nantes for the Linangan Art Residency in Cavite, Jao San Pedro for Emerging Islands in La Union, Alwin Reamillo at The Orange Project in Bacolod, and Faye Abantao at Butanding Barrio in Puerto Princesa. Their projects will be presented at the Ayala Triangle.

Another welcome addition is the AR Art Trail, where visitors can follow an interactive augmented reality trail at the Ayala Triangle Gardens with the aid of daata mobile app. Named after Leeroy New's artwork Aparisyon, it brings to life sculptures that the artist created from discarded plastic bottles during the pandemic. This takes a look at how much plastic we throw away and the possibilities this can bring in a climate crisis-stricken future.

This is complemented by writer Eliza Victoria's story titled Let Me Hold Your Hand, which follows the tale of a woman who escapes to an enchanted realm.

You can follow both stories by scanning QR codes spread out on the grounds of the AR Art Trail. Also part of the presentation are works by artists Jeremy Couillard, Eva Papamargariti, Elliot Dodd, Tuomas Laitinen, Keiken, Aaajiao, and Florian Meisenberg.

Participating Galleries

For ArtFairPH 2022, 46 exhibitors from the Philippines and abroad will showcase artworks in their respective galleries and through online viewing rooms. Since gallery-hopping is essential in this year’s fair, you can check out the Gallery Hop section on the website to plot out your route and schedule for viewing the gallery shows depending on their proximity. You can also catch the virtual Gallery Walkthrough on March 23 and 24.

To complete the ArtFairPH hybrid experience, virtual exhibits and online talks complement the on-site special exhibitions. This year's major works are: I Can't Tell You What I Don't Know, Only That I Don't Know by James Clar in front of the Ayala Museum, and two solo pieces by Juanito Torres and Norman Dreo in conversation under the title Perspectives at the Greenbelt 5 Gallery.

Art Fair Philippines 2022 runs from March 23 to April 1 at Ayala Triangle Gardens, Paseo De Roxas Street corner Makati Avenue corner Ayala Avenue, Makati City. For more information, visit Art Fair Philippines' website.
