Filipino Craft Beer Brands Bag Awards at Recent Asia-Wide Championship
Cheers to these local breweries and their standout beers.
(SPOT.ph) Here's one sweet reason to clink your beer glasses tonight. Filipino purveyors Elias Wicked Ales & Spirits, Mitchell's Backyard Brewery, Bulul Brewery, and Engkanto Brewery represented the Philippines in this year's Asia Beer Championship and bagged several awards—including one of their beers being named Champion Beer of Asia!

The Asia Beer Championship involved 12 countries and over 640 beers competing, and the results were announced at the Asian beer networking event Brew Asia 2023 recently held in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. The deciding body includes "professionally trained international brewers and qualified beer judges," according to their website.
One major reason to celebrate? Elias' Summer Breeze Saison, a saison farmhouse ale, took home the Asia-wide Barthaas Group Champion Beer of Asia award—qualifiers of which are brands with the eight highest scoring Gold medal beers in the competition. "Usually Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Singapore usually dominate [this] and its the first time ever for the [Philippines] to win this award," Elias' Cyrus Cruz says in an exchange with SPOT.ph.
What are those "medal beers," you ask? See, the Championship also recognizes the top three beers of different categories from breweries around the continent, awarding them certificate-slash-"medals" in colors of Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Elias took home Gold for their Summer Breeze Saison, and Bronze for their Supperr Fruit Punch session fruit beer; they were further chosen as the Country Champion brewery for the Philippines (as they also did in 2022). Fellow Filipino brewery Mitchell's Backyard Brewery also scored a Gold medal for their Vanilla Porter, and Bronze for their Backyard Brown Ale.
That's not all: Elias also bagged the coveted Chairman's Selection for their There She Gose and Gosebusters gose beers, and their Proppa Pale Ale British pale ale. Also recognized in the selection were Filipino beers American Sunrise Pale Ale by Mitchell's Backyard Brewery, Pilsner by Bulul Brewery, and Mango Nation Hazy IPA by Engkanto Brewery.
The Asia Beer Championship is an annual continent-wide award providing a "trusted quality benchmark for consumers as well as independent feedback to the regions' brewers."
