(SPOT.ph) When the clock strikes at 4 p.m., there's no escaping the rumble of the hungry worker's stomach. The Filipino penchant for a late afternoon snack doesn't discriminate, whether you're working from home or at a fancy office building in a business district. And we don't know about you, but there's something about the mid-workday that just warrants a warm pastry or piece of bread.
In case you find yourself in Makati looking for the comforts of your neighborhood bakery treats, you'll want to drop by Bon Bakery around Salcedo Village in Makati. Here, not only can you cop classic baked treats like croissants, bread, and cookies, but you'll also get a touch of home with their line of baked empanadas and spiked cocktails to tide you over your remaining hectic workday.

Here's what to expect when you hit up Bon Bakery in Makati
If the name sounds familiar to you, you're right. Bon Bakery's not exactly new. The upscale bakeshop was the in-house artisanal corner bakery in Bon Apetit at 1120 House. But as more and more patrons came looking for specialty cakes, pastries, and signature products, opening its flagship store made the most sense.
Today, Bon Bakery's only stand-alone store is in Makati's Salcedo Village. Smack in the middle of the busy Ayala CBD. Bon Bakery's small shop combines Parisian sensibilities and aesthetics with the more modern South Korean minimalist cafe style—a nod to the different cafés Bon Bakery owner Pamela Lopez has frequented during her many trips abroad.
Entering the 15 to 20-seater café, you'll be greeted with their display of baked treats for the day. You might even catch a whiff of cinnamon and butter as they toast orders for customers. While the space is small, we'd like to think of it more as intimate, i.e., a great place to enjoy mornings or take a break during hectic afternoons glacially. But there's also nothing wrong with just popping in and grabbing a snack to-go.
Pro tip: arrive early for the most selection. Though Bon Bakery is perfect for sating mid-afternoon pastry hankerings, it's also open early in the morning. Many Makati workers and expats in the area also frequent the shop for their morning snacks. If you want buttery, flaky pastries to start your day, this store is for you.
What to order at Bon Bakery in Makati
Looking at the display can be a bit overwhelming. Everything just looks so golden and buttery. You might opt to just ask for a menu and read the descriptions, but at Bon Bakery, there is no paper menu. Take a look around the store, and you'll notice that the menu is painted on the walls.
Bon Bakery offers a selection of savory and sweet baked treats. The sweet-toothed can enjoy a wide selection of cakes, gluten-free brownies, and Bon Apetit's famous palm-sized cookies. These sweet treats are made with just the right amount of sweetness, perfect for an early morning jump-start or late afternoon sugar rush.
They also serve a small selection of caffeinated drinks. Bon Bakery has three plant-based coffee drinks, namely the Lavender Latte (P180), Oatmilk Cappucino (P180), and the Long Black (P180) that'll really whip you into shape thanks to their caffeine kick. Don't be fooled by the label—these drinks are strong and have more of an earthier taste profile. This makes them the perfect companion to any of Bon Bakery's sweet treats.
TBH, our favorite sweet treat x coffee pairing has to be mixing any of Bon Bakery's Baked Waffles (starts at P120) and pairing them with our favorite sweet and creamy Lavender Latte. This combination of Bon Bakery's signature layered, crispy, flaky waffles with their take on the latte is a match made in heaven. You get a perfectly balanced, sweet, earthy flavor profile that's set to give you an energetic sugar and caffeine field rush.
Pro tip: Bon Bakery's Baked Waffles use the same pastry base, but come with different toppings. If you're unsure of which to try first, we strongly recommend getting the Signature Plain (P120). That'll give you the most leeway to play with the different flavor combinations with the other things on the menu.
But if there's one thing you can't skip when making a Bon Bakery run, it's their Fried Empanadas. We have to admit we were skeptical. We mean, empanadas in a French-slash-Korean cafe seem to be out of place. But, Bon Bakery's take on the classic merienda is out of this world. Sure, they have classic empanada flavors like tuna, chicken, and beef, but they also have more specialized flavors like Chimichurri Lucban Longganisa (P100), Truffle Mushroom (P100), and Barbacoa Stewed Beef (P95). More than having exotic flavors to the familiar empanada, Bon Bakery's take on the snack are encased in a golden brown, buttery, flaky shell that's so addictive that one piece is never enough. Trust us. Get more than one.
TBH, these empanadas are so good. You could have them for breakfast, snacks, and late-night hankerings. Have you ever thought of having empanadas along with your cocktails?
Don't knock 'em 'til you try them. Pair the empanadas with light refreshers, or if you're having a particularly hard day, you can even have them with Bon Bakery's cocktails. Our pick? Pair the empanadas with the Basil Smash (P225) for a refreshing drink with a kick that's perfect for warm Philippine nights. Think of it as a light night-cap after a long, tiring workday or a pre-game for when you're partying it up in Poblacion.
