Taste Test: McDonald's Launches New Chocnut Sundae and Frappe

(SPOT.ph) There's always this nostalgia when it comes to Choc Nut—it's that sweet part of our childhood that gets giddy with excitement opening the crumbly, chocolatey, and nutty candy melt in the mouth. While we do love it as it is, our Choc Nut-shaped hearts always has space for other takes—be it simple or creative.

In this SPOT.ph Taste Test, we're looking to see if McDonald's new Chocnut Sundae and McCafe Chocnut Frappe get the seal of approval from the kids-at-heart who love Choc Nut.

What's in McDonald's new Chocnut Sundae and McCafe Chocnut Frappe?

The Chocnut Sundae is as straightforward as it can be. Priced at P65, the new dessert uses McDonald's signature vanilla soft serve and caramel sauce, and is topped with slightly crushed Choc Nut—and we say slightly because there are bigger chunks in the mix. It's a rather simple Choc Nut dessert application that you may or may not have DIY'd one summer day in the past.

On the other hand, the McCafe Chocnut Frappe—exclusively sold at McDonald's branches with a McCafe—is more on the creative side. Priced at P175/Medium and P185/Large, this drink is an ice-blended coffee with Chocnut mixed in, then topped with whipped cream and more crushed Chocnut bits. 

Will McDonald's new Chocnut items make your inner child happy?

The Chocnut Sundae is basically a Hot Caramel Sundae with Choc Nut toppings. While it's not mindblowing, it's still good. At first, it didn't make sense why they didn't choose the Hot Fudge Sundae as the base, but it was when we took a bite that we understood the flavor combination of caramel sauce and the Choc Nut: You can still taste both products in every bite. 

We know what you're thinking. Yes, you could order the caramel sundae, buy a pack of Choc Nut from the supermarket, crush the Choc Nut into bits, and do the whole thing on your own. But the price difference between the Chocnut Sundae from the Caramel Sundae isn't that big—it's quite reasonable at P18 (based on McDelivery prices). They're not stingy about the Choc Nut toppings either.

When it comes to the McCafe Chocnut Frappe, the drink feels more like a peanut butter-y mocha drink. It's not our favorite McDonald's coffee thus far, but it's not that bad either. What we like about it is that you can still taste the espresso despite the cloying sweetness of the Choc Nut added, and perhaps, other sweeteners. 

Which one should you order?

Comparing the two new McDonald's Chocnut desserts, we recommend the Chocnut Sundae. We think it's a great upgrade to the classic Hot Caramel Sundae. Make sure you have all three components (ice cream, caramel sauce, and Choc Nut bits) on your spoon before taking a bite.

McDonald's new Chocnut items were launched alongside two other new items, namely the Double Cheeseburger (improved recipe) and the Sweet Corn McShaker Fries. If you want to try all these new items in one go, you can opt to order the Double Cheeseburger Meal with Sweet Corn McShaker Fries and then add on your choice of Chocnut dessert (or both, if you feel like it).
