Taste Test: Is Selecta's New York Cheesecake Really All That?

(SPOT.ph) If you're part of local Facebook groups that specifically talk about food, then you must have seen the ice cream on your feed at least once—in our case, one too many times. Yes, we're talking about Selecta's new limited-edition flavor ice cream flavor: New York Cheesecake.

Since its launch in the first week of April, it's been getting all kinds of mixed, divided reviews. For this round of the SPOT.ph Taste Test, we wanted to see for ourselves if Selecta's New York Cheesecake is worth all the commotion.

Here's what we thought of Selecta's new New York Cheesecake Ice Cream:

We read the label, okay? It says "Vanilla ice cream with New York cheesecake pieces" on the tub's lid. As someone who loves vanilla ice cream, we're here to clarify that there is nothing wrong with vanilla ice cream. But we do feel like it was a missed opportunity that they could have used a cheese-flavored ice cream instead of vanilla. Selecta already has the Supreme Quezo Real Ice Cream in their roster of staple ice cream flavors, after all.

Still, we're willing to look past the vanilla ice cream base, only because 1. We read the label before tasting and 2. We really love vanilla ice cream. The one thing we couldn't understand is the "New York cheesecake pieces" bit. 

These "pieces"  felt more like bits or crumbs than actual pieces that you can bite into. Sure, there are larger bits, but you're lucky if the one you have on your spoon has enough of the cheesecake bit in it that you can taste the cheesecake. Most of the "pieces" we got from the tub we bought were just tiny crumbs of the crust—mostly crumbled, resembling crushed biscuits.

This isn't to exaggerate, but we had to scavenge for big enough cheesecake bits and remove the vanilla ice cream just so we could taste the cheesecake.

The final verdict: Is it all just hype or is it legitimately good?

If you're not fully invested in the cheesecake part of this (supposed) New York Cheesecake ice cream, well, we won't stop you from buying a pint or a tub. We got our 1.3-liter tub of Selecta New York Cheesecake Ice Cream at 7-Eleven for P318, but it should be cheaper in supermarkets.

But if you're looking for the cheesecake flavor, then we think you'd be better off buying other cheesecake-flavored or -inspired ice cream—or just go and buy an actual New York cheesecake from a restaurant or coffee shop. We're fairly confident you can even find other cheesecake ice cream brands in big supermarkets, or you can check local brands that offer their take on this well-loved dessert too.
