(SPOT.ph) What is it about natural wines, anyway? Maybe it's their low-intervention character that shines the spotlight on their roots—both the inherent taste of the grapes, and the magic that comes about as they're allowed to ferment sans additives. Maybe it's the tight-knit nature of the natural wine community, comprised predominantly of curious and creative young folks who are more than happy to explore the possibilities of the winemaking process. Either way, the local fascination for them continues to grow, evident in the number of shops focused on selling bottles of this sort and their increasing availability at restaurants around the Metro. And if you're looking to keep exploring, mark your calendars: after a successful run last year, the Manila Natural Wine Fiesta is making a comeback this Saturday, May 4.

Sip + learn about natural wine at this one-day event on Saturday:
The 2024 edition of the Manila Natural Wine Fiesta will be taking place at White Space, Makati this Saturday, May 4, from 4 to 9 p.m. As with the 2023 edition, the event is a collaboration between Philippine importers and distributors of natural wines—Anybody Wines, Bombvinos, Good Morning Wines, Gran Hacienda Wines, Some Love, and Supernatural Wine.
Tickets go for P2,495 a pop; you get a tasting glass that you can use to samples of over thirty wines at the venue. Should you be drawn to any particular bottle(s), we suggest you purchase them at the site—you get a 10% discount off bottle list prices for the duration of the event! And yup, there will be food, too, from the likes of Hungry Homies for hearty burgers, Los Tacos for zingy tacos, Ricksha Streetside Tandoor for soul-soothing Indian fare, Goods From Scratch for breads, and Toso for pizzas.
Granted, there's no official or regulated set of characteristics as to what counts as "natural"—but it's generally agreed that the term natural wine refers to those made with handpicked (versus machine-harvested) grapes not sprayed with pesticides or herbicides. They do away with sulfites, yeast, and other additives (sugar, egg whites, and so on) that conventional wines make use of. The results vary widely, but some can be distinctly more effervescent, more dynamic, and arguably, more alive than its conventional cousins.
