(SPOT.ph) Cupcakes by Sonja was one of the first shops in the Metro to ever focus on baking and selling cupcakes since it opened in 2006 and since then, they've been considered to be one of the top-of-mind options for desserts. In the present, Sonja Ocampo—the eponymous Sonja from Cupcakes by Sonja herself—has decided to venture into a bigger world with croissants, crepes, cakes, pies, and coffee at her new shop By Sonja.

Check out By Sonja, a new pastry and coffee shop in Makati:

Sonja Ocampo has transformed her commissary in Makati, where she bakes the cakes and cupcakes for Cupcakes by Sonja, and turned it into the one-stop dessert shop By Sonja. It prides itself in being inclusive as it has pastry options that are sugar-free, gluten-free, and plant-based.

The space engulfs you with the sight of every famous French pastry you can think of—and then some more. On the By Sonja menu, they have plain, sweet, and savory croissants; confections such as cakes, tarts, and macarons; mille-pressé which are two circular flaky pastries sandwiching a sweet, fruity filling in the middle; crepes and galettes in classic flavors; an interesting selection if pies that include an Elvis Pie; and whole cakes that have similarities to the ones sold at Cupcakes by Sonja. Of course, there's coffee and tea to pair with the food.

Of all the desserts and pastries on the menu, you shouldn't pass on the opportunity of Ocampo's dream-come-true crepes. She fell in love with crepes on a trip to Paris more than two decades ago and studied it at Rennes, where the delicacy originated, just so she could bring it to the Philippines.

"I fell in love with everything I learned and dreamed of one day bringing it [crepes] home," she shares. Now, her menu has five classic crepe flavors: Butter & Sugar, Yuzu & Honey, Salted Caramel, Chocolate, and Banana Salted Caramel.

All the crepes, and even the Galette Complete, use Le Beurre Bordier, a French brand of butter considered by many to be the best in the world—and with that in mind, you already know you're not getting any basic crepe.

Aside from using the best butter known to mankind, rest assured that By Sonja makes it a point that all other aspects are of quality too. By Sonja's desserts and pastries are freshly baked in small batches, and they use fresh fruits and vegetables grown on their family farm.
