(SPOT.ph) It's been over five years since I joined the Gordon Ramsay pop culture cult. I've been following him through all the seasons of Masterchef and Hell's Kitchen to watching his collaborations with influencers—safe to say I'm hooked on all things Ramsay. Heck, I'd even go as far as saying that Ramsay instilled in me my exacting standards for food and dining.
I spent years pining over his signature Beef Wellington, his cooked (not raw) scallops, and his classic fish and chips. So when news broke that Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill was finally opening in Manila, I was excited, to say the least. Thus, when the invitation to try the new restaurant arrived, I knew I had to do this—you know, for science.
Here's what went down when we visited Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill in Newport World Resorts in Pasay:
My trip to Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill started with figuring out what to wear. Many—myself included—have the misconception that the restaurant is strictly formal, but speaking with the people behind the restaurant, I found out that the restaurant is actually one of the more casual concepts in the Gordon Ramsay group. So, there's no need to dress to the nines unless you want to. Smart casual will do.
Once I got over my outfit paralysis, entering the Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill isn't as intimidating as I thought it would be. It felt like stepping into a well-decorated home. The type where you feel welcome and at home, but at the same time, you know you had to be on your best behavior.
There's couch seating with a well-stocked bar as a backdrop, an inside den with more seats and private rooms for big groups of 10 and more, and the main dining room with tables, chairs, and booths. All these are decked out in Gordon Ramsay's signature cherry red and forest green hues—staple colors in the Bar and Grill concept.
The entire restaurant may not look massive, but it's a solid 85-seater, with expansion plans as early as now. It's a sight to behold that'll have any Gordon Ramsay fan giddy. But the best part of it all? Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill features an open kitchen. This means you can see the action happen, how your food is prepared—the whole shebang, sans the screaming, angry Gordon Ramsay calling chefs "donkeys."
Must-try menu items at Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill Manila:
Let's face it: I didn't just go here for the vibes. The true star of the Gordon Ramsay Bar and Grill experience is still the food. Like almost everyone else, I waited on bated breath to be able to try the dish Ramsay is most famous for, Beef Wellington.
Beef Wellington (P3,888)
For the uninitiated, Gordon Ramsay's Beef Wellington is a thick cut of MB7 Wagyu beef cutlet painted with mustard, covered in a generous layer of truffle and mushroom duxelles, served with creamy mashed potatoes and red wine jus. It is a technical dish to execute, requiring spot-on timing, temperature control, and a level of finesse only a few chefs possess.
This dish costs a whopping P3,888 for a slice—but a very thick slice at that. You can share this with a partner or two and still feel full. It's that filling. Every bite of this Beef Wellington is hefty. You get tons of umami from the melt-in-your-mouth, medium rare filet mignon, a fragrant, flowery aftertaste from the duxelles, slightly tempered by the starchy puff pastry. A few bites of this dish, especially if you order appetizers and dessert, will have you raising the flag. It fills you up—though on the bright side, that also makes it good for sharing.
Other menu items to try aside from the Beef Wellington at Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill
When you dine at Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill, you have a wide array of appetizers, mains, grilled items, and desserts to choose from. It would be a disservice to your experience to only try the Beef Wellington. Here are some other must-tries in the Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill repertoire.
Appetizers
Ceasar Salad (P650)
While I love a good salad, it's not the first thing I would order when at Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill—but after tasting this version of the classic, I'd definitely go back for more. Ramsay's Ceasar Salad takes your standard greens and dressing with a touch of elegance thanks to the inclusion of 36-month-aged parmesan, a delicate soft-boiled egg for creaminess, and whole anchovies. These additional touches give a regular ol' Ceasar salad a Ramsay glow-up, making it a perfectly balanced starter for your Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill meal.
Mains
Gordon Ramsay Fish and Chips (P1,999)
Trust an Englishman to get his fish and chips right. If there's a dish we'd recommend guests try aside from the Beef Wellington, it would be this. Close-to-2,000 peso pricetag aside, the serving size is huge like everything else in this restaurant. A group of three to four guests can definitely share this, especially if they're ordering other items from the menu.
Ramsay's Philippine version of the fish and chips uses a generous amount of pink grouper (Lapu-Lapu) lightly coated with a batter that preserves the moisture of the white fish despite being deep-fried. The dish comes with a side of thick-cut fries or chips, as the Brits call them, along with a side of tartare sauce and vinegar that ties it all together. It also comes with crushed peas, which you definitely shouldn't sleep on. It's our favorite discovery and is what we imagine to be a great alternative to mashed potatoes.
Iberico Pork Secreto (P1,988 for 300 grams)
Another good-for-sharing main is the Iberico Pork Secreto. This slightly sweet-smoky pork cut is lean enough for those who dislike pork fat but has enough fatty layers to keep it moist and easy to bite.
Desserts
We'll be the first to admit that the mains are the star of the show, but oh, we were wrong. Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill's desserts all had me swooning. They are the perfect ending to a core memory—more than just a sweet treat, each dessert is a masterclass in technique and flavor balance.
Sticky Toffee Pudding (P550)
The first dessert we sank our forks into was Ramsay's Sticky Toffee Pudding, a light sponge cake doused in the richest butterscotch sauce that we still can't get out of our minds. It also comes with a spoonful of vanilla ice cream, berries, and a crumble, creating a temperature and texture balance that highlights the Toffee Pudding even more.
Baked Alaska
This October, Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill is adding Baked Alaska to its menu. This dessert, with debated-upon origins, is one of the most technical ones around. It consists of a layer of cake and ice cream enclosed in a torched meringue. Ramsay's take on this is a tableside preparation.
It's hard not to be in awe as your pastry chef torches your Baked Alaska right beside you. It's first drizzled with rum, then lit on fire, and finally torched with a gun, which leaves a rich, smoky hint on the meringue.
Aside from the pomp and glamour of the presentation, the flavor profile keeps us coming back for more. Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill Baked Alaska combines dark chocolate and honeycomb ice cream on top of a flourless chocolate cake. It's a not-so-sweet combination despite all the chocolate. The sugar high comes from the thick layer of Italian Meringue encasing the cake and ice cream, but even that is a complex dome of flavors from the burnt, caramel-like sugar from the torching to the additional flavor of the rum. All in all, a dessert to keep you up all night.
Granted, feedback on the restaurant has been mixed on places like TikTok, with some calling it overhyped or even coming up with homemade alternatives to the food served. In this humble writer's opinon, calling this restaurant "overhyped" for charging what it does isn't necessarily fair when you think about everything else that goes into maintaining a restaurant—and giving the guests a memorable experience over the course of a meal.
As a self-proclaimed super fan of Gordon Ramsay and his brand of exacting, perfectionist food service, I was here for the Michelin-star-worthy experience—a performance that goes beyond just the food that's served. It's the combined effort of the kitchen, the front-of-house, and the management to bring a holistic dining experience for the books. Dining at Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill was a joy as you could witness the perfect synergy of well-trained staff, ambiance, and good food. It's like a well-oiled machine. With this consideration, would I dine here again? It's a resounding "yes, chef!"
