(SPOT.ph) If you've ever been to a convenience store while in the Land of the Rising Sun, you've likely noticed the wide selection of sandwiches (a.k.a. sando) they carry. Not only are they easy to find and convenient to keep around when you start to get the munchies; they're also plenty tasty, with balanced fillings in between soft and fluffy shokupan. One local brand gives sando their own contemporary flair: Panko Pussy, a Japanese-style sandwich venture by the folks behind 12/10.
You can see touches of tradition in Panko Pussy's sandwiches, but with distinctly 12/10 touches that make them creations all their own. For starters, their take on a Katsu Sando (P430) has wagyu-pork menchi katsu (a breaded-and-fried patty of minced meat) and cabbage, plus pickled kyuri, cheddar, tare, and yuzu kosho in toasted milk bread. This East-meets-West creation might remind you slightly of a cheeseburger, but with an added umami boost from the Japanese ingredients in the mix.
The Spicy Tuna (P380), on the other hand, is anything but your typical tuna sandwich. It's got raw tuna, kyuri, and negi dressed in a spicy sauce, and sandwiched in sourdough rye. If you love the spicy-tuna sashimi served at Japanese restaurants, you'll love this—and the sourdough provides a surprising tanginess that balances out the heat of the tuna mix.
Last but not least on their short-but-sweet lineup is the Gyutan Philly (P450). This sandwich it takes inspiration from Philly cheesesteak in how it pairs beef (in the form of slow-cooked beef tongue, a highly underrated cut of beef) and Provolone cheese, but also dresses it up with onion, green pepper, and wasabi for a welcome heat. Toasted milk bread underlines the mix, making for a mix of meaty, cheesy, peppery, savory, and slightly sweet in every bite.
Panko Pussy's sandos are available from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 10 a.m. onwards, and they allow for pickup or delivery from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Simply visit their website to place your orders.
12/10 is a homegrown izakaya-style establishment with The Girl + The Bull's Thea de Rivera and Gab Bustos at the helm. They opened in 2014, and were quickly embraced by the local crowd for their hip takes on Japanese eats and drinks.
