(SPOT.ph) With the perennial heat in the Metro, it's really no wonder that kori kohi has become a favorite way for many a coffee lover to get their caffeine fix. This Japanese coffee drink is distinct from others of its kind in that it involves frozen coffee cubes served with milk—and as you pour the milk over, the coffee cubes melt and you get a cool and creamy, latte-like drink. One new spot in Makati highlights kori kohi and gives it one-of-a-kind flavor twists: Check out Kohi, a Japanese-inspired coffee shop that'll be your next hangout when you're in the area!

The idea was conceptualized by Bryan Co (who owns graphic design studio Sponge Graphics Design and Japanese-style sausage shop Hottu Doggu) and Rayan Moussa (who owns a car rental business). "The pandemic [had] imposed a big challenge on our businesses and finances," shares Co in an exchange with SPOT.ph. "So for months, we were thinking of what other business or work we can do for extra income and to help us get by." They had a lightbulb moment as they were riding their bikes one day. "We came across a local pop-up local coffee shop and got inspired, and so we thought to partner up and build our own." Being both are Japanese-food fans and coffee drinkers—and given Co's other Japanese sausage business—they decided to fuse these elements, leading to the birth of Kohi on May 15.

Kohi appears as a small and laid-back stall along Antipolo street. The store is reminiscent of small coffee shops in the Land of the Rising Sun, with a minimalist-yet-brooding, mostly-wooden front and a glass window from which orders are taken and dispatched. You'll also find a few tables and chairs at the front of the stall, where you'll find a number of diners (and possibly bikers, among whom the coffee shop is popular). "The original plan was to accommodate takeout [orders] only, but we saw that the people are enjoying the area," says Co.

For their coffee, Kohi uses their own local blend of Sagada Arabica and Kalinga Robusta beans. The star of the show is the Kori Kohi (P110), which comes with frozen coffee cubes, warm milk, and a sugar syrup—just pour the milk over and watch as the coffee gradually imbues it with a dark-brown hue and robust flavor.

Aside from the original variation, their Kori Kohi also comes in other flavors like Vanilla (P110), Chocolate (P120), Matcha (P120), and the bestselling Salted Caramel (P120).

If you prefer a classic cup of joe, you can also go for one of Kohi's hot options, like the Black (P50/12 ounces) or Mocha (P70/12 ounces); or cold drinks, like the Creamy White (P80) or Choco Dream (P90). Pair your beverage with one of their Homebaked Donuts (P60) which comes in flavors like Maple Bacon and Nutella, or their Hottu Doggu (P120) or Japanese sausage sandwich with bonito flakes and seaweed powder, and you're all set!
