Ortigas Spot Marufuku Japanese Restaurant Is Closing

(SPOT.ph) We don't need to tell you that 2020 and 2021 weren't exactly the best years for the local dining industry—with the pandemic, after all, came ever-changing quarantine statuses and more people generally staying home than going out. The closure of many notable restaurants and bars the city over soon followed. Our fingers were crossed that things would at least be looking up by 2022—but sadly, yet another of our favorite local spots has announced its closing: Famed Japanese spot Marufuku shuts its doors on January 15.

Marufuku Japanese Restaurant is closing:

The Ortigas establishment announced the closure on social media, where they thanked their loyal customers for their patronage through the past decade since they opened. "It has been our honor to serve you," reads the post. But there remains a sliver of hope, as they write: "As the saying goes, when a door closes, another one opens."

Though in a relatively secluded location, Marufuku is a favorite among locals in the area for their stellar takes on Japanese classics alongside more modern combos that showcase the cuisine in a contemporary light. Their use of fresh and great-quality ingredients (many of which hail from the Land of the Rising Sun itself) made even the simplest of ingredients—like fresh fish for their sushi and sashimi; veggies for their salads—shine with minimal prep. Even when they went the more elaborate route, they showcased excellent culinary skill by employing proper techniques that made for great-tasting results. Their Kaki Motoyaki made for a most impactful bite—think plump Hiroshima oysters grilled and given a savory kiss by miso; their Ebi Tempura was also some of the crispest we've tried. Suffice to say, they will most definitely be missed.
