Hits the Spot: You’re Missing Out on This Luxe Choco Chip Cookie
Cafe Georg never fails.
(SPOT.ph) It’s a surprise that a certain award-giving body with an understandable chokehold on Cebu hasn’t already recognized this cookie, because we’re here to tell you that it most certainly blows the competition out of the water. Now it must be said that the food at Cafe Georg, and its sister restaurant Oh! Georg, is universally good, especially when it comes to desserts. So this really shouldn’t come as a surprise, but its Milk and Dark Chocolate Cookie (P150) is a revelation.
Here's why Cafe Georg's cookie deserves a star:
This cookie is a chonky one. It felt so significant in our hand that we decided to weigh it—and it came out a hefty 141 grams. But what’ll really catch your attention is its rich, buttery fragrance. It tastes exactly how it smells, but then you bite into the large couverture chocolate chips—because of how generous they are with the chocolate, it’s impossible to get a bite without it. The pieces that are closer to the center of the cookie remain soft—and it’s a whole new experience.
About that chocolate: nowadays everyone throws around the word “couverture,” but this one actually delivers. You’ll know it’s good quality chocolate from its aroma, flavor, and texture. It’s perfectly balanced—no off-putting acidity—and oh-so-creamy. There’s no waxy aftertaste either, the telltale sign of a lower quality chocolate or butter alternatives.
Previous versions of this cookie occasionally had undissolved sugar crystals, which are not without their charm. In fact, the writer preferred them as they added a textural and homemade element to the dessert, which made it even more comforting. It also served as a good counterpoint to the decadence of this cookie. But this more technically correct version has consistently been on the shelves as late as the summer of 2022. This cookie is dense and moist. Heck, it’s so dense that we’re almost convinced it’s got no leaveners in the dough; and there's practically no cakiness here. This makes it even more rewarding. It’s a celebration of butter, sugar, vanilla, and chocolate chunks.
Cafe Georg’s cookies come with very specific instructions on their takeout container. But because we choose to live on the edge, we just keep it at room temperature instead of the freezer. It’s not like it’s going to sit in the heat longer than a day when it’s this good anyway. The reason for this is so that the chocolate in the middle remains gooey as long as it doesn’t go in the fridge, so you can have it immediately, without any downtime. This isn’t to say that you should disregard its instructions to reheat the cookie though, but we acknowledge that not everyone has the EQ to wait 10 minutes (five in the oven and a couple more to let it cool down) for a bite of this glorious goodness.
If you’re patient enough, however, you’ll be rewarded, just as the label says, with a crisp exterior and even meltier interior. Plus the added bonus of perfuming your entire kitchen (or modestly-sized condo unit) with the smell of butter and freshly baked cookies.
