(SPOT.ph) The thing about the growth of Manila’s food scene is that it’s not limited to the merchant side of things. So, too, has the community of food lovers in the Metro—and not only in size and number. Of course, Filipinos have long loved to eat but over the years—likely with the rise of the internet and local and international travel—local food enthusiasts have grown in their sophistication of knowledge on matters of food. Whether you’re a seasoned cook on the lookout for rare ingredients or a dining enthusiast looking to explore the different foods around the world, you’ll feel right at home at One World Deli—a recently opened deli on Jupiter street in Makati, which doubles as a hidden gems where you can nosh on topnotch steaks and other dishes at reasonable prices.

Owned by the PYC group (also the folks behind One World Kitchen, Sawsaw, Pardon My French, and more), One World Deli is, first and foremost, a food store—but by no means just any food store. For starters, they’re bigger and more spacious than many other delis around; it’s hard not to be blown away by the extensive line of products stocked on their shelves, glass cases, and fridge areas. Here, it’s all about topnotch foods and pantry items from all around the world (the Philippines included!) that have a story to tell—i.e. those made with notable ingredients, or products from global companies renowned for their heritage, ethical principles, and the like.
Expect to get hold of some of the best food finds—both local and global—some of which you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. For one, One World Deli is the exclusive distributor of Saltverk sea salt—the famed brand of sea salt from Iceland that’s hand-harvested, sustainable, and sharp yet clean in saltiness. Turophiles will be elated to find topnotch cheeses from the likes of California brands Fiscalini Farmstead (their Craft Beer Cheddar, P370/170 grams, perfectly marries the creamy-sharp profile of cheddar with the subtle yeasty note of Imperial Stout) and Sierra Nevada (try the Bella Capra goat cheese, P565/225 grams and is wonderful sprinkled on salads), as well as Davao’s Malagos Farmhouse (their Fresh Chevre, P330, is a lush-tangy dream). And if you’re one to appreciate a good honey, don’t miss the Western Australian bioactive variants from A Buzz From The Bees, famed for their sustainable methods of harvesting and resulting sweet elixir with complex flavors.
Work near the area? There’s a grab-and-go section with prepared sandwiches, salads, and juices using the ingredients they also sell at the store—so yup, you can recreate them in your home kitchen, too. Discerning diners looking to upgrade their snack game will want to keep their cupboards filled with savory and sweet treats from The Creamery Catering, Nairn’s, Risa Chocolate, Pili & Pino, and more. Jams from The Fruit Garden are bound to elevate your breakfast game several notches; and regardless of your shef skills, it’s well worth stocking your kitchen with their spices, sauces, and other condiments—think salad dressings from Whisk, truffle sauce from Truff, olive oil from Oli Medi and Casa Rinaldi, and more.
Wines, of course, are offered in full force at One World Deli as they’ve got a great selection of Old World and New World bottles for just about every occasion. Not to be missed are their wines from Napa Valley; they’ve partnered up with a number of small, family-owned wineries in the area and have limited stocks of bottles from the likes of Frank Family Vineyards (from former Disney Executive Rich Frank!). Planning a casual get-together with friends? Grab bottles of premium craft beer from Tagaytay-based Monkey Eagle Beers. And for your daily dose of caffeine (or zen, whatever floats your boat!), you’ll find special blends of coffee from Hineleban Farms and Trails & Traces Coffee Roasters, and tea from Tsaa Laya.
Meats, Veg + Other Fresh Provisions You Can Try In-Store
The highlight of One World Deli, in our book, is the shop's star selection of fresh and frozen meats, seafood, veggies, and more. For starters, as with the rest of their product lineup, these are all of superb quality with rich stories behind the product and/or brand. The best part, though, is that while you can purchase the ingredients themselves, you can also have Chef George Bustamante and the One World Deli team cook it for you—in VIP Sales Head Vicky Lauchengco’s words, it’s akin to “gourmet paluto”—and nosh on them right at their dining area for a small fee.
The key to making salads and other veggie dishes that don’t suck is to start with quality fresh produce—and at One World Deli delivers just that from family-owned Pedro Farms in Cavite. They’ve got everything from vibrant greens to mushrooms and more, and you can go ahead and have the team whip these up into a light yet satisfying salad—the natural sweetness of their romaine lettuce and cherry tomatoes shine even plain, or with a light drizzle of balsamic vinegar and good extra-virgin olive oil. Well worth trying, too, is their butternut squash; for our visit, Bustamante roasted squash halves to bring out their natural earthy sweetness, and topped them with Malagos blue goat cheese for a sharp-pungent contrast.
Carnivores and fine-dining patrons won’t want to miss One World Deli’s selection of top-tier meats from companies that have flavor, ethics, and sustainability in mind. One World carries Angus beef from Braveheart, a renowned California purveyor whose beef starts with cattle born and raised humanely and sustainably from family farms in the U.S. The Braveheart Hanging Tender (P2,000/kilogram) is a fantastic choice if you’re out for a bold, beefy bite that’s juicy when cooked medium-rare, and has just a hint of chew. If you’re up for beef that’s more on the decidedly rich and decadent end of the spectrum, they also carry Australian Wagyu from Jack’s Creek—and the Jack’s Creek Wagyu Chuck (3,590/kilogram) is rightfully buttery in mouthfeel and full-bodied in flavor.
Not a lot of people tend to think highly of pork, but that might just change when you troop over here. Lauchengco gushes about One World Deli’s pork selection; this is not just any old porcine after all. They’ve got premium Duroc Cross Pork from U.S. brand Allegience, known for their tender cuts with great marbling. Also worth noting are their pork cuts from Suffolk family farm Dingley Dell, a UK-based business that prioritizes animal welfare, taking care of their baby pigs in flower-filled farms. “Even the feeds, you know what they’re eating,” says Lauchengco. “They really believe in taking care of the pig from the beginning to the end.” The result? Better welfare for the pigs, and clean-tasting meat that’s rich without having the typical odor of pork—and believe it or not, she says, this is pork you can actually have medium-rare.
And Lauchengco was right. Take it from the author, who typically isn’t a fan of pork yet had second helpings of the relatively lean yet juicy Dingley Dell Pork Cutlet (P1,350/kilogram) with a drizzle of balsamic, and the juicier, more indulgent Dingley Dell Pork Rib Eye Steak (P835/kilogram) with a sesame oil, raw garlic and smidge of Bustamante’s homemade gochujang, KBBQ-style.
Seafood, anyone? One World Deli’s got tanks with live crabs and Maine lobsters, and glass cases displaying salmon, hamachi (P3,200/kilogram), and ocean trout (P1,600/kilogram)—pro tip, you can have them slice and serve it to you sashimi-style and have it right at their raw bar. Not to be missed are their stellar varieties of oysters‚ including the subtly briny yet naturally sweet Tazmanian Prime Bistro Oyster (P115/piece) and uber-succulent Irish Gallagher XL Oysters (P265/piece).
If you’re looking for a post-meal treat—or a sweet bite for lazy afternoons—definitely check out their café area, where you can get cakes, tarts, sweet buns, macarons, and other desserts from local purveyor Tattooed Baker, who they partnered up with as part of their community initiative. (Don’t miss Tattooed Baker’s freshly baked breads, either!) If it’s a cold and creamy treat you seek, they’ve got quite the selection of ice cream from brands like Fog City Creamery and Gelato Manila available in cups and pints, as well as dairy-free ice cream bars from Bubu Bars. To really make the most of your visit, don’t leave without going for a cup or two of Gelato Manila’s Soft-Serve Gelato in seasonal and rotating flavors; on the day of our visit they had a Taho variant (P120) that we had complete with sweetened sago.
While One World Deli is by no means the only specialty food shop around, there’s something real exceptional about the way their team display their expertise with fellow gastronomy enthusiasts. Rather than coming across as snooty or snobbish the way it can be at other stores or establishments, here it’s more about sharing stories and bonding over the genuine love for good food—a love that most of us, at the end of the day, can definitely relate to.
