Throwback: Jaclyn Jose Wins Cannes Best Actress Award

(SPOT.ph) Jaclyn Jose has passed away. The news was reported by several media outlets, with initial information pointing to the 60-year-old actress having been found lifeless at her Quezon City home on March 3.
It's no doubt that the tragedy comes as a shock to us all. Jaclyn Jose, real name Mary Jane Guck, has long been a constant of the silver and small screens—she is, after all, the Jaclyn Jose. She made her acting debut in 1984 at just around 20 years old, immediately earning a FAMAS Awards nomination for her role in Chito S. Roño's Private Show. Jaclyn went on to become a household name thanks to her portrayal of Magda in late '90s telenovela Mula Sa Puso.
With her countless nominations and multiple Gawad Urian awards, arguably her biggest win in the acting world is her Cannes Award. Jaclyn Jose is the first Filipina to win Best Actress at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival held in France, where she bested the likes of Hollywood star Kristen Stewart to take home the award.

Jaclyn Jose took home the award in 2016 for her portrayal of a hardened mother who runs a sari-sari store that also sells illegal substances in order to make ends meet in Brillante Mendoza's Ma' Rosa. This film shined the light on small-scale drug selling in the Philippines and made the rounds in international film festivals, including being selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. While it did not make that win, Jaclyn Jose's portrayal proved to be more than memorable.

Jaclyn Jose is clearly stunned, and you can hear her breathlessness on the stage, with her saying "I am so surprised." With her on stage is her real-life and on-screen daughter Andi Eigenmann and director Brillante Mendoza, whom she thanks.
"I would like to share this recognition to all the Filipinos who are here now, to my daughter, to Brillante, to my countrymen, to the Philippines," says Jaclyn Jose on stage.
As she later recounts on Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho, it did not even register that she had won thanks to the way her name was announced in a French accent. And even during her speech, she carried on in her trademark straightforward manner.
