Lost Sabungeros was anticipated to be a standout among Cinemalaya 2024's offerings. The documentary, directed by Bryan Brazil, promises to tell a gripping tale of the lives of people whose world has changed for the worse because of bloodsport. With its unique narrative approach and rich cultural context, the film was poised for success.
But the excitement surrounding Lost Sabungeros vanished when Cinemalaya revealed on August 4 that they were canceling its premiere due to "security concerns." However, they did not provide further details about the reasons behind the cancellation.
The documentary film produced by GMA Public Affairs and GMA Pictures was originally set to screen on Thursday, August 8 at 5 pm at Ayala Malls Manila Bay Cinema 2, and on August 9 at 5:30 pm at Cinema 8.
Kip Oebanda’s Balota, also produced by GMA Pictures and featuring Marian Rivera, will replace the previously scheduled film on August 8. However, there has been no announcement regarding a replacement for the August 9 schedule.
The Tale of Lost Sabungeros
The story of Lost Sabungeros revolves around a group of passionate saunders or cockfighters, whose lives are upended when a mysterious disappearance occurs.
Brazil, known for his deft handling of complex themes, crafted a narrative that intertwined the intensity of cockfighting with a deeper exploration of cultural identity and personal loss. The film was expected to be a visual and emotional spectacle.
The documentary Lost Sabungeros features three whistleblowers who shared information about the crimes committed against the missing sabungeros. GMA Public Affairs described it as a "daring" investigative documentary, stating that unidentified individuals monitored the team and case studies during filming. Because of this, many people argue that it makes it all the more reason to see it.
For now, you can only watch the trailer as there are no announcements yet regarding where it will be shown:
