UPDATED: A High School Musical Reunion Is Happening: Here's What You Need to Know
East High Wildcats, rejoice!
(SPOT.ph) The red-and-white jerseys, the cafeteria song-and-dance numbers, and the urge to follow your dreams can only mean one thing—High School Musical. The film first aired on the Disney Channel in 2006 and went on to become one of Disney’s most popular movies, spawning three follow-up films, several TV shows, a musical, and a loyal fanbase. It’s been a while since you saw the East High Wildcats on screen, but now is a good day to rejoice: the High School Musical reunion is happening.
It will be part of The Disney Family Singalong, set to premiere in the Philippines on Tuesday, May 12, at 7 p.m. on the Disney Channel.
Here’s everything we know about the High School Musical reunion so far:
It’s for a show on ABC.
The HSM reunion will be for an ABC special called The Disney Family Singalong, which will feature performances of the classic Disney hits you know and love.
It will happen sooner than you think.
It will air on April 17, 8 a.m. (Philippine time) on ABC.
Ryan Seacrest is hosting.
Radio personality Ryan Seacrest, who has hosted American Idol and the Primetime Emmy Awards, will host the ABC special.
Producer Kenny Ortega is onboard.
ABC and Disney executive chairman Bob Iger approached HSM producer Kenny Ortega, and he said yes with no second thought. In an interview with Deadline, he said “It gave me a purpose to get up every morning. I feel really good that we have an opportunity to do something like this—it’s good medicine.” After saying yes, he immediately call up the cast to ask if they were willing to join.
The whole gang is back.
You’ll be happy to know that Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, and yes, even Zac Efron will be part of the reunion sing-along. Ortega reached out to the cast and everyone was quick to say yes. He got a hold of Efron later than the others, but the actor, a.k.a. Troy Bolton, was more than game to join.
The cast had been in contact prior to the reunion announcement.
On April 12, Hudgens uploaded a photo on her Instagram account: It was a screenshot of the HSM cast in a Zoom call, captioned with “Guess who’s back...” Fans were hoping for some fun online reunion or concert, but it turns out the Wildcats were just waiting for the go signal to announce the official reunion!
They’ll be singing “We’re All In This Together.”
Ortega said, “I’ve been sent videos from doctors, orderlies, nurses, and medical professionals in masks and hospital gowns singing [the song] in the hallways of hospitals.” The song united the cliques in the film and cemented friendships between students with vastly different personalities, but its call for unity and togetherness still stands, and it seems only right for the cast to sing this song. “It’s a really nice fun coming together of a lot of young people that are banding together under the lyrics of this song for the show,” he added.
It will feature other Disney stars.
The cast of The Cheetah Girls, The Descendants, Zombies, and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series will also make appearances during the performance.
You’ll also get a special Aladdin performance.
Stage director and actor James Monroe Iglehart and the Broadway Company of Disney’s Aladdin are coming together for a performance of “Friend Like Me.”
Other celebrities will also take part.
Aside from your fave Disney actors, other celebrities will also grace the special. Christina Aguilera, Michael Bublé, Kristin Chenoweth, Auli'i Cravalho, Amber Riley, John Stamos, Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, Alan Menken, Elle Fanning, Josh Groban, Darren Criss, and Tori Kelly are just some of the artists who will be present to perform the hits from Disney movies like Moana, Mulan, Frozen, and more.
