(SPOT.ph) The month of September sees a couple of the biggest blockbusters of all-time returning to Philippine cinemas, as well as a packed month of streaming, with a star-studded Netflix slate and must-watch fantasy shows HBO's House of the Dragon and Prime's Rings of Power now both airing weekly. All these buzzy titles make the month out to be a rich buffet for many a pop culture nerd, but all movie lovers know to not be fixated merely on what's in the shining spotlight and to seek out the less amplified voices and stories, as these are the films that truly expand one's personal canvas of what cinema can be.
Giving one said less amplified voice a stage in the Philippine moviegoing scene, Shangri-La Plaza mall is hosting this year's Mexican Film Festival, Cine México, at their Red Carpet cinema from Wednesday, September 7 to Saturday, September 11. As a treat for cinephiles venturing out to expand the canvas, the festival has free admission on a first-come, first-served basis for all the films on its lineup.

The film festival will open on Wednesday, September 7 with the film La promsesa (The Promise), a heartwarming drama about a rebellious boy gifted with intelligence and his bond with his teacher struggling with depression after a failed marriage.
Speaking of a drama about struggles, the multiple award-winning film Después de Lucía (After Lucia) depicts the story of a young woman and her father trying to adjust to life in a new city after the death of her mother. The film received the UN Certain Regard Award at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, among its accolades received from film festivals in the United States and Spain.
The rest of the lineup includes the comedy Ella es Ramona (She is Ramona), wherein a woman comes across magic beetles and uses them to turn her life right-side up, as well as dramas such as the forbidden political romance 90 días para el 2 de Julio (90 Days to Election Day), the brotherly bond picture Fuego adentro (Fire Within), and the grief meditation El Mar entre las Casas (The Sea Between the Houses).
See the official schedule below.
The films will be screened in Spanish, with English subtitles.
