It's Official: Deadpool and Wolverine Are Going on a Road Trip

(SPOT.ph) "I hope parallel universe me is doing better." When Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said that the Marvel Cinematic Universe opening up the Multiverse would allow for infinite possibilities in movie storytelling, we never once thought that that would mean the return of our beloved X-Men movie cast. However, after Sir Patrick Stewart's return as Professor Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, we realized anything and everything is now on the table for the MCU.

Fast-forward to present day, we have Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds dropping the pretty, uh, "hugh-ge" news that Hugh Jackman will be reprising the role of Wolverine in Deadpool 3, the first Deadpool film to take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Our parallel universe self could only dream to be so lucky.

Here's everything we know about Deadpool 3:

Reynolds, both the lead actor and producer of the third Deadpool film, announced on social media Jackman's return as Wolverine with a video that featured Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You"—only "You" is replaced with "Hugh"—and a title card that read "Coming Hughn." The video ended with the Deadpool logo being slashed with three metal claws, obviously indicating the mutant's involvement in the three-quel.

Reynolds also confirmed that the film will be dropping in cinemas on September 6, 2024, in between Marvel Studios films Thunderbolts in July and Fantastic Four in November. It's currently unclear whether Deadpool 3 replaces Thunderbolts as the final film of Phase Five or Fantastic Four as the first film of Phase Six.

Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox and all its film properties in 2019 allowed for Deadpool 3 to be the Merc With the Mouth's first feature foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As with all MCU outings, Feige will produce, alongside Reynolds, while previous Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will continue to pen the script for the character. Stranger Things, The Adam Project, and Free Guy director Shawn Levy will direct the film.

While the plot of the film is still being kept under wraps, Reynolds did tweet in January 2021 that Deadpool 3 was "gonna be a road trip between Deadpool and Logan" before Disney acquired 20th Century Fox. We'd say he was joking as he added "Rashomon style," but he did end the tweet with "for real," which of course means it's 100% true.

Deadpool 3 drops in cinemas on September 6, 2024.
