( In a world of increasingly prolific nostalgia-centric content, there have been some truly—let's just say—curious creative decisions made lately by the lord of childhood sentiment-driven media, The Walt Disney Company.  From making a hyper-realistic version of The Lion King to composing a new rendition of Mulan without any of the OG music, there's definitely a clear pattern of wanting to be different enough from the original work, even if it means risking the hopes and dreams of long-time fans. And today's news about their upcoming live-action Hercules adaptation is no different.

Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo are producing for Disney a live-action remake of Disney's 1997 Hercules movie. As part of a Variety feature on their production studio AGBO, Joe gave an update on the musical project by saying it'll be "a little bit more experimental" than one might expect. He added that they're looking into the social media platform TikTok as they figure out how to approach making the musical aspect more modern.

Here's what the Russo Brothers had to say about the live-action Hercules movie:

In the interview with Variety, Russo stated that their upcoming Hercules movie will share the same inventive approach the original 1997 animation did when it came to its musical side. He stated:

"There are questions about how you translate it as a musical. Audiences today have been trained by TikTok, right? What is their expectation of what that musical looks like and feels like? That can be a lot of fun and help us push the boundaries a little bit on how you execute a modern musical."

To be fair, the original Hercules did inject a lot of modern comedy into its classical Greek setting. It even did "what are those?" with the Air-Herc's before it was a meme. The movie was all about reimaging Hercules as a contemporary celebrity, so in this day and age, it'd mean TikTok influencers... we guess.

The film will be directed by the 2019 Aladdin remake's Guy Ritchie, who Russo is confident will be able to pull off the modern take with his signature flair. Russo said that the film will be "a little bit more experimental in tone [and] a little bit more experimental in execution. I think they’re excited to see what we can all bring to it in a way that isn’t just a reinterpretation of the animated film. Guy is perfect for it because he has [a] penchant for experimentation."

Time will tell to see if the approach pays off. However, it'd also be important to remember that Russo Brothers also cited the Steven Soderbergh crime comedy Out of Sight as an inspiration for Infinity War and 20th Century Italian filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni as an inspiration for Endgame, so we can take the citing of TikTok as an inspiration here with a grain of salt. Hopefully.
