Venus Raj’s "Major Major" answer makes it to ABC’s World News with Diane Sawyer
ABC’s World News with Diane Sawyer recently featured Miss Philippines Venus Raj’s "major, major" answer in the Miss Universe 2010 pageant where she was declared fourth runner-up. Asked by celebrity judge William Baldwin what was the biggest mistake she ever made and what she did to correct it, Raj said, "In my 22 years of existence, I can say that there’s nothing major, major, I mean, problem that I’ve done in my life because I’m very confident with my family and the love that they are giving me."
World News said that Raj was not alone in being stumped for an answer to this question, citing former U.S. President George W. Bush’s struggle to answer practically the same question and showing clips of ABC reporters who also had "a hard time answering that one." Good Morning America news anchor Robin Roberts could only say, "Hmmm," while ABC News correspondent John Berman thought for a bit before saying, "Waxing." ABC News White House correspondent Jake Tapper said, "Certainly not anything I’m going to say on national television."
Louise Kursmark, director of the Resume Writing Academy, told World News why people struggle with this question: "No one wants to admit they make mistakes." She suggested picking an experience where you learned something. "You need to be honest but you don’t have to bare your soul."
Raj has waved off the "major, major" backlash, some of which are documented in social networking sites. She told TV Patrol World, "At least naging part ako ng everyday conversation nila (At least I was part of people’s everyday conversation). Do not think of the past; think of the future." Manila Bulletin reported that Raj told ABS-CBN network that "her mind sometimes goes blank when she’s onstage."
