Paris Hilton pleads guilty to possessing cocaine, says she thought it was gum and avoids jail
AP report on Paris Hilton’s guilty plea
Under the terms of a plea deal, celebrity socialite Paris Hilton pleaded guilty on September 20 to possessing drugs and obstructing an officer, reports the Associated Press (AP) via Yahoo News. Hilton, 29, must serve 200 hours of community service and a year of probation. She must also complete a substance abuse program and pay a $2,000 fine. If she violates her probation, she may be imprisoned for a year.
Hilton was arrested on August 26 at the Wynn resort in Las Vegas. A small bag containing 0.8 gram of cocaine fell out of her purse in front of Lt. Dennis Flynn, according to the AP. In Flynn’s report, he said, "(Hilton) said she had not seen it but now thought it was gum." She claimed the purse and the cocaine it contained belonged to an unidentified friend.
AP reports that two Wynn resorts banned the hotel heiress after her arrest. Her boyfriend, nightclub mogul Cy Waits, was also arrested on August 26 on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was later dismissed as a partner in the Wynn resort’s nightclub.
