(SPOT.ph) Canada, a country renowned for its work-life balance, picturesque landscapes like the Niagara falls and Grouse Mountain, and world-class education system, continues to attract a relatively large number of international students each year.

This isn't surprising when you consider the fact that Canada holds quite a number of universities that consistently rank among the best on a global scale. Given that, it won’t be a surprise If you're picturing yourself as one of their students. However, before you can immerse yourself in Canada's academic environment, you need to know how to apply as a student through the Canadian visa application process. We'll guide you through the essentials of applying for a Canada student visa and answer the relevant questions along the way.

How to apply for a Canada student visa:

Apply to a Designated Learning Institution in Canada.

Without this, you can't make your way to the visa office just yet.

Visit the official website of the Canadian government and apply online.

Complete the forms and attach the required documents. Make sure the photos and the soft copies of the files are not blurred to avoid further delays and issues with the processing.

Pay the application fee.

Application fee is around CAD 150. Don’t forget to keep the receipt and have a photo of it as a backup in case it gets lost or damaged.

Attend an interview.

You may be required to attend a face-to-face interview and submit biometric information (such as photos and fingerprints) while you’re at it.

Wait for the processing and the results.

It can take somewhere from three days to two weeks to complete the assessment. One of the factors at play here is the number of applications the Canadian government has to process at a time.

Here are the types of Canadian student visas:

Study Permit

The gold standard, allowing you to engage in long-term studies, typically valid for the length of your official study program.

Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)

This is temporary and valid for short-term courses, such as diploma courses.

These are the application requirements if you want to study in Canada:

Eligibility

First, you need to show that you're a bona fide student who plans to maintain that status throughout your stay in Canada. Take note that the eligibility goes beyond just having an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Moreover, the Canadian government needs to be convinced that you are a genuine candidate who intends to pursue studies and will not present any immigration-related risks in the future.

They need proof that you have adequate funds to support yourself during your studies. Proofs include having available funds for the tuition fee, living expenses, and return travel. They also want to know that you have no criminal records and are in good health. In addition, you should have a solid post-study plan that includes leaving Canada when your study permit expires.

Admission Requirements

While applying for admission, you have to prove that you meet the specific requirements for your chosen program. Those may vary from University to University, so you need to be meticulous.

Canada Student Visa Requirements

Letter of acceptance from a DLI

This is your golden ticket. A letter from your chosen learning institution that they are thrilled to have you on board. This official document signifies that your chosen learning institution is eager to have you on board. Don't underestimate this as it sets the tone for the rest of your application.

Proof of Funds

The Canadian authorities want to be sure you're financially equipped to handle the demands of your studies. This includes tuition fees, living expenses, and sufficiently smooth return travel. It’s all about showing you can comfortably live student life without financial worries jeopardizing your educational journey. If you have a family or someone else financially supporting you throughout your student journey, be sure to have this documented as part of your proof.

Health Clearance

This involves submitting medical reports confirming your good health. A clean bill of health assures the authorities that you're physically prepared for the demands of studying abroad, and won't pose any threat to public health in Canada. Also make it clear that you’re getting the clearance for visa purposes, so the medical institution can make the proper documentation related to your application.

Character-related documentation

This will require you to get a police clearance. If you have other records from other countries that you have satisfactory records, you may include that in your list of documents.
