NLEX Connector Introduces Higher Toll Fees for Motorists
Minimum toll fees now start at three digits.
(SPOT.ph) Heads up, motorists: Higher toll rates for the North-Luzon Expressway (NLEX) Connector will kick in starting October 15, 2024, with the minimum charge now entering the three-digit range for small vehicles.
The Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) is giving the green light for these new fees as part of a staggered hike plan to “cushion the impact to expressway users” (which means there are still more increases to come). For now though, the new toll rates are as follows to get from Caloocan to Magsaysay Boulevard:
- Class 1 vehicles (cars, motorcycles) – P119
- Class 2 vehicles (buses, light trucks) – P299
- Class 3 vehicles (heavy trucks, large vehicles) – P418
For nearly a year, motorists enjoyed discounted toll rates—P86 for Class 1, P215 for Class 2, and P302 for Class 3—after the España to Magsaysay Boulevard section opened in October 2023. Now, with the project steadily moving forward, the new rates are set to ease in before full toll rates are implemented once the entire NLEX Connector is fully finished.
What to know about the NLEX Connector
The NLEX Connector is an eight-kilometer, four-lane elevated expressway project that improves connectivity between the northern and southern parts of Metro Manila. Specifically, it links the NLEX with the Skyway network with an endpoint at Sta. Mesa in Manila.
According to the TRB, it is also the first to implement a 24/7 barrier-free Electronic Toll Collection System. Motorists will only need to slow, not stop, for the RFID to be scanned by the machine (so they say). That said, make sure your Easytrip RFD balance is ready to go before your next trip.
The project is divided into two main sections:
- Caloocan to España (5.15 km) – This road opened in March 2023. It stretches from C3 Road in Caloocan and goes through major cities like Malabon City, Navotas City, and Valenzuela City, with an exit at España Boulevard.
- España to Magsaysay Boulevard (2.75 km) – This extension opened in October 2023, easing traffic congestion in major thoroughfares like Aurora Boulevard, España, G. Araneta, Lacson, Ramon Magsaysay Boulevard, and Nagtahan. Those coming from southern Manila can also just enter the Ramon Magsaysay Interchange to reach NLEX without having to pass service roads.
Although the two sections are now operational, the final southern connection is to link with the Skyway system near Sta. Mesa is still pending completion.
