(SPOT.ph) Love the holidays but hate the traffic? That’s you and everyone else stuck on the same expressway. Here’s a bit of good news though: two new lanes on the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) between Susana Heights, Muntinlupa and Calamba, Laguna are set to open in the third week of December.
San Miguel Corporation (SMC) confirmed that construction is on track, with only minor works remaining before the December opening. The SLEX expansion increases the number of lanes from four to six in both the northbound and southbound directions along the 29-kilometer section.
“This December, as our countrymen prepare to celebrate Christmas and travel more to spend time with friends and family, they can look forward to a wider, better SLEX. This will help in significantly reducing traffic buildup during the holiday rush,” SMC CEO Ramon Ang said in a statement.
As part of the upgrade, SLEX toll plazas have also been equipped with automatic license plate recognition cameras as part of SMC’s efforts to comply with government mandates on barrier-less expressways. Motorists will only need to slow down, not stop, for the RFID to be scanned by the machine (so they say).

More to come for the SLEX expansion
The ongoing lane widening of SLEX from Susana Heights to Calamba is just the beginning.
Similar upgrades are in progress for the Calamba to Sto. Tomas, Batangas section, which includes the expansion of 20 bridges connected to the SLEX main carriageway. However, Ang said this phase isn’t expected to finish until July 2025.
“Our contractors and project teams continue to do everything they can to minimize impact on vehicle traffic,” Ang said. “We want to assure our motorists that we will continue to work as efficiently as possible, and minimize disruptions to travel as we complete the expansion.”
Once the lanes open, motorists on the southern route can expect shorter travel times and hopefully less stress. Until then, patience is key—just a few more weeks to go.
