Heads Up, Students: You Can Now Fly for 20% Less

(SPOT.ph) They say traveling is the best kind of education you can get, and it looks like Filipino students are going to have more chances to do so. President Rodrigo Duterte has signed into law the Student Fare Discount Act, a.k.a. Republic Act 11314, which mandates a 20 percent discount on all public transportation fares for students. While the discount has been available for most land travel options in the city (jeepneys, buses, UV express vehicles, taxis, and transport networks like Grab), this law will include trains (Metro Rail Transit, Light Rail Transit, and the Philippine National Railway), passenger ships, and yup, even airlines!

Students from grade school to college can avail of their discount any day of the week—including holidays—for as long as they are enrolled. Simply present your school ID or valid enrollment forms to get your discounted fare. Those enrolled in post-graduate studies, short seminars, or special classes (e.g. dancing, driving, skydiving) are not covered by the law. 

For those already planning a flight back home or a field trip far away, note that the discount will only apply to your ticket's base fare, according to a report by GMA News Online. Plus, the discount can't be used with any other promos. 

"This is a year-round benefit that students can avail so they can have discounted fares whenever they want to go home to their families, even during holidays," said Sen. Sonny Angara, one of the authors of the measure, in a report by CNN Philippines. This transport discount also comes after students were given free rides in the Metro's main train lines.
