Plan Your Trip to Siargao: Surigao Airport to Resume Direct Flights From Manila in 2019

(SPOT.ph) Attention, travellers! It looks like it might soon be easier to get to the island of Siargao, thanks to more options for flying in. The runway of the Surigao Airport in Surigao del Norte has been fully restored and direct flights to and from Manila are scheduled to resume before 2019 ends.

The runway has been on limited operations since an earthquake damaged it in 2017. As of October though, an additional 340 meters has been added to the originally one-kilometer long runway. This will allow for direct flights to Manila before 2019 ends, according to the Department of Transportation. Plus, flights to and from Cebu can now operate with less restrictions on passenger load. 

The Department of Transportation has added that they want the airport to return to its full pre-earthquake capability, so they're looking to build the runway to 1.8 kilometers by early 2020. 

This newly renovated airport in Surigao City—which is the capital of Surigao del Norte—is a gateway to Siargao. While you can always fly direct to the island haven through the smaller Sayak Airport, we've got our fingers crossed that flights to Surigao Airport will be cheaper and more constant. From there, you can hop on a ferry to the Dinagat Islands in Siargao and head on straight to the beaches.
