Get Ready for a Chiller MRT-3 Ride in 2020
You might not be able to keep your cool, but the trains will.
(SPOT.ph) Commuting in Metro Manila heat is on another level of hell. It's damn near impossible not to come out of our train lines without looking like something the cat dragged in, but it looks like 2020 is the year of the plot twist we've been waiting for. New air-conditioning units are being installed in the train carts of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3, with a total of 94 units to be put in, and 26 more to come.
A total of 120 air-conditioning units were bought by the consortium of Sumitomo Corporation, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and TES Philippines. Around P167 million was spent on the units by the consortium, who took over the rehabilitation of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) in December 2018.
Before these units arrived, a total of 60 replacements were installed in 2018, according to the Department of Transportation. Which means that we're ideally in for a cooler ride this 2020; "Kaya naman ihanda na ang inyong mga jacket," said the Department of Transportation.
The rehabilitation of the MRT-3 is set for a July 2021 deadline. The Sumitomo consortium is looking at doubling the trains' speed to 60 kilometers per hour from 30. Rails are now being replaced for a smoother and faster ride. Plus, they're aiming to raise the average number of trains on the tracks from 15 to 20 sets. Here's hoping commuting in the Metro won't have to be as hardcore as it usually is!
