(SPOT.ph) More than 40,000 people have now left their homes in search of shelter amid the continued eruption of Taal Volcano—three evacuees have passed away after being displaced. Meanwhile, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology predicts more unrest from the volcano in the coming days. And yet, in the midst of all these dismal news, acts of kindness continue to shine. Farmers from La Trinidad, Benguet donated 3,000 kilos worth of vegetables to Batangas on Wednesday, January 15, with more batches of donations to follow, according to a report by CNN Philippines.
Police and civilians gathered together to pack what looks to be a whole lot of vegetables, including cabbage, carrots, and potatoes, to be delivered to the evacuees of Batangas, based on a post by the La Trinidad Municipal Police Station. The caption states that it was "Gulay para sa mga kapatid na taga-Batangas," adding thanks to the farmers who willingly gave their harvest for donation. "Alam namin na mahirap magtanim ng gulay at tamaan pa ng mababang presyo, pero di kayo nagdalawang isip magbigay," it added.
The truckloads of vegetables reached Lipa City on Wednesday night, January 16, according to the same CNN report. But more donations are expected from the highlands. Members of the La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Post have gathered another 3,000 kilos worth of vegetables to give to the evacuees affected by Taal's eruptions while the Cordillera faction of the Department of Agriculture has already promised to lend their truck for the mission, according to an article on Inquirer.net.
Benguet's farmers were recently hit with several problems: oversupply and frostbite, according to a report by the Manila Bulletin. So this donation means that much more; fingers crossed these acts of kindness continue!Â
