Call Your Long-Distance Friends: You Can Now Host Listening Parties on Spotify
The app is testing out a beta version of the feature!
(SPOT.ph) Dance parties may not be such a good idea in the current situation but here's one way you can kind of get the groove on while in quarantine. Spotify has rolled out a beta version of the Group Session feature—which means you and your friends can listen to songs and podcasts at the same time, no matter how far apart you are! Just note that you'll need a premium account to test it out.
Up to groups of five can join the listening session. To start one, you can find the option in the Connect menu—found on the bottom left corner of the play screen— and tap on the green "Start Session" button. You can send friends or family the link to join your sesh through online messaging apps of SMS.
Once they join the group, any of you can control the beat. Anyone can "pause, play, skip, and select tracks on the queue as well as add in choices of their own using the standard controls," said Spotify in a statement. The changes made will immediately reflect across all devices in real time, distance be damned.
Spotify notes that since the feature is still in beta, you can expect the feature to evolve in time. It was first rolled out in May as a feature that allowed same-time listening but for devices within close proximity.
this strange new world.
