X, formerly Twitter, now allows sexual content

According to the X May policy update, users "may share consensually produced and distributed adult nudity or sexual behavior, provided it's properly labeled and not prominently displayed."

"We believe that users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed. Sexual expression, whether visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression," it says.

X classifies it as adult content, with posts containing nudity and sexual acts to to be limited to its adult users. "We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality."

As such, there are restrictions in place to limit visibility to children and adult users who want to skip the adult content: "We balance this freedom by restricting exposure to Adult Content for children or adult users who choose not to see it."

How does X define adult content?

According to the official X update, "any consensually produced and distributed material depicting adult nudity or sexual behavior that is pornographic or intended to cause sexual arousal" counts as adult content.

"This also applies to AI-generated, photographic or animated content such as cartoons, hentai, or anime," it adds. The following are considered as adult content: full or partial nudity, including close-ups of genitals, buttocks, or breasts;
and explicit or implied sexual behavior or simulated acts such as sexual intercourse and other sexual acts.

Users who regularly post adult content on X are urged to adjust their media settings. The move will place all images and videos behind a content warning that requires acknowledgement before the adult content media can be viewed.

A one-time content warning can also be added to individual posts. Failure to diligently mark adult content as such will result in X adjusting account settings for users.

"Users under 18 or viewers who do not include a birth date on their profile cannot click to view marked content," X said.

X users may soon begin to see new media content warnings on posts that have been marked as adult content, instead of a generic sensitive media label. Once these new content warnings are available to a user's account, they are urged to continue marking their content accordingly.
