(SPOT.ph) To be honest, I forget what occasion it was. Was it Valentine’s? Christmas? A birthday? What I do remember is selling a bunch of my old clothes online because I had to buy my then-S.O.'s holy-grail pair at the time: adidas Superstars. It was P10,000.
It officially retails for P5,300 on Lazada, Shopee, Zalora, and adidas' website. But it was 2014—or 2015? It's been a decade now—and the only way you could get adidas Superstars was through an online reseller.
It was the height of the popularity of adidas—at least, from where I was standing. If you weren't wearing Superstars, you were wearing green-tabbed Stan Smiths.
And so, as a college student, I saved my baon. I'd take photos of my unused clothes that could still be worn and posted them online. Zara, Cotton On, Uniqlo—all for around P300 or less. It took around two to three months of saving and selling.
The thing about buying the shoes online is you wouldn't know if they were legit. All you had to go off of was a few comments from other "buyers" saying, "Legit seller." Then, you had to message them, wait for the seller to place their order (possibly abroad?). Once the order arrives, they get back to you, asking where they're going to have the pair delivered.
Now, it's as easy as adding the pair to cart. And, thanks to official flagship stores on Lazada, Shopee, Zalora—and of course, the adidas official website, you know that you're getting the real thing.
When I finally got them years back, they arrived in the classic blue box. But I'm no sneaker expert, so I didn't know what signs to look for to check if they were the real thing. What was important to me was that it was received warmly and with much gratitude. I think I was a month late for the special occasion it was supposed to be a gift for. But it's the thought—and hard-selling—that counts, right?

What makes the adidas Superstars a classic?
At this point, the adidas Superstars has received cult status. It was originally launched in the 1970s as a basketball shoe before it eventually became popular with hip-hop fans and skaters. It's most famous for its shell-style toe combined with the black three-stipes logo of adidas.
Eventually, it came in multiple colorways and adidas came out with collabs with brands like BAPE, Prada, and even LEGO.

To this day, I still don't know if I got scammed. Looking back, I paid almost double its official price, so I should've been more apprehensive. What can I say? I don't see red flags.
I'm not bitter about it, though. The fact that I got cheated on after it was the bigger scam.
