10 Best-Selling Birkenstock Sandals in Manila

Obsessed with Birks?

ILLUSTRATION War Espejo

(SPOT.ph) Did you know that Birkenstock has a long history that dates as far back as the late 1700s? German craftsman Johann Adam Birkenstock began his family’s legacy of shoemaking, which was passed down from one generation to the next. In 1896, his great-great-grandson Konrad Birkenstock, with the skills he had inherited from decades of shoemaking, began developing Birkenstock’s now-trademark footbed. This was inspired by the imprint left by feet in the sand, meant to ensure maximum comfort on the foot for hours, thanks to the snug fit and support. The business grew in popularity as the years went by. The flexible sole’s technology was even used by soldiers after the Second World War because of the orthopedic support they provided. By 1964, another descendant of Johann, Karl Birkenstock, developed the sole into the Birkenstock sandal we know today.
