According to Time magazine, the "ugly" sweater trend can be traced back to family-friendly '80s films and sitcoms, with the likes of Chevy Chase rocking it in the classic Christmas flick National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. The style reemerged in 2001 and what began as an ironic celebration of tacky-on-purpose clothing turned into a ubiquitous yearly trend. And when it comes to these "ugly" sweaters, the cornier, quirkier, and slouchier, the better.
