Yes, You Can Cop the Custom Sneakers Margielyn Didal Wore at the Tokyo Olympics
She teamed up with New Balance to create them.
(SPOT.ph) Filipino skateboarder Margielyn Didal won the hearts of fellow athletes as well as sports fans all over the world after her memorable stint at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, both for her infectious good vibes and her knack for photobombing Olympic snapshots and dancing on live television. After finishing seventh in the Women's Street Skateboarding category, Didal quickly cemented herself as one of the highlights of Philippine athletics in 2021.
Though her charisma and personality stole the show, there was one thing about Didal's Olympic run that went under the radar, but totally deserved more attention—her shoes! Didal teamed up with sportswear brand New Balance to create the sneakers, which featured a unique design inspired by the Philippines.
Margielyn Didal could be seen wearing her custom New Balance sneakers throughout her Olympic run:
Didal first announced her partnership with New Balance in April 2020, a collab that led to the skateboarder creating the Margie Didal Pro NM379 'Pilipinas' Sneakers, the first-ever shoes for NB Numeric Asia, the skateboarding division of New Balance’s Asia Pacific arm. And yup, she proudly wore the pair during the 2020 Olympics.
The shoe sports a predominantly gray exterior with white soles. On the upper, you’ll see red, white, and blue accents lining the shoe’s outer logos, top eyelets, heels, and tongues. Look closely and you’ll see the words "M. Didal 379" printed onto the heel stabilizer in bright yellow, commemorating Didal's work and legacy. The pair is finished off with the Philippine flag on the heel tag. From end to end, the sneaker is all about Pinoy pride. It's currently available on Cebu-based online store Common Ground's website.
