(SPOT.ph) Things are looking up for everyone who promised to travel more this year. The Philippine passport just moved higher on the Henley World Passport Index for 2024. The Philippines is now ranked 73, with 69 visa-free destinations for passport holders. We're currently sharing the spot with two other countries, namely Uganda and the Cape Verde Islands.
While it doesn't necessarily surprise us that our passport isn't at the top of the spots, it does come as welcome news for travelers looking to tick off destinations in their travel bucket lists. The visa application process, after all, can be a pain in the ass. In 2023, the Philippines ranked 78th with 67 visa-free destinations allowed for Philippine passport holders. Lucky for those bitten by the travel bug, this continues the rising trend for our humble travel document, which has seen a slow but steady ascent in the rankings in recent years.

The Henley Passport Index is the authoritative ranking of all the world’s passports. It compares the visa-free access of 199 different passports to 227 travel destinations based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) – the largest, most accurate travel information database – and enhanced by Henley & Partners’ research team.
It is computed based on a scoring system wherein if no visa is required, then a score with value = 1 is created for that passport. The same applies if you can obtain a visa on arrival (VOA), a visitor’s permit, or an electronic travel authority (ETA) when entering the destination. Where a visa or any pre-departure government approval is required, a score with value = 0 is assigned. The total score for each passport equals the number of destinations for which no visa is required.
