( When you think of Ilocos Sur, what easily comes to mind is its heritage capital, Vigan. The city, after all, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 for being the "best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia." And like most provinces in the Philippines, it is also home to idyllic beaches, hiking spots like the Sangbay ni Ragsak Falls and Mt. Namandiraan in Cervantes, and other natural wonders. If you're looking to tick off another province in your bucket list of local destinations, you'll be happy to know that Ilocos Sur is opening to leisure travelers starting on November 5 from areas under general community quarantine and modified general community quarantine, as well as Alert Levels 1, 2, and 3. (Yes, that includes Metro Manila, which is under Alert Level 3 until November 14.)

Here are the latest Ilocos Sur travel requirements (as of October 22):

  • Valid ID
  • Tara Na! travel request and QR code
  • Department of Tourism-accredited travel agency or hotel booking confirmation
  • Negative antigen test results (taken within 24 hours prior to entry)

Guidelines for Ilocos Sur reopening:

  • Travelers for leisure need to stay in the province for at least one night.
  • Visitors who have relatives and friends in Ilocos Sur are still required to stay in a hotel/resort/villa/transient house. They're not allowed to stay in the residents' houses.
  • Only pre-booked or pre-arranged tours with accredited tour agencies and accommodation establishments are allowed in the province. Walk-in tourists are not allowed.

UPDATE (October 31): This article has been updated to include exact date of Ilocos Sur's reopening.
