What You Need to Know About The Sound of Music
The Sound of Music is a timeless classic that has captured the hearts of many generations. Based on the memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers set in 1938 Austria, it follows Maria who takes a job as governess to a large family. She later falls in love with the kids' widowed father, Captain von Trapp. It's a creative collaboration between Richard Rodger (music), Oscar Hammerstein II (lyrics), and Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse (book).
The musical opened on Broadway in 1959 and later won the Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical (Mary Martin as Maria von Trapp), Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Patricia Neway as Mother Abbess), Best Conductor and Musical Director (Frederick Dvonch), and Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Oliver Smith). The Sound of Music premiered in London's West End in 1961. It was revived in London in 1981, on Broadway in 1998, and again in London in 2006. Its London production was staged at The Theatre at Solaire Resort in Parañaque City in 2017.
